Finalizing Kitchen Design - Could Use Your Input
Comments (8)Great feedback here so far. Thanks to everyone who has responded. @Kristin S - yes, the appearance of the low ceiling with the railing is rather 'unique' haha. We have lived here for a few years and both agree that, despite the look, it is very functional to have that space open. That being said, I am open to reconsidering. One earlier idea that I had was to put bottom cabinets in with a countertop for a little seated bar, but I was not convinced at the time. Our general plan for the new nook is to let it continue to be the heart of the house. It is just organically the center of the house for everyone. @lucky998877 - slider to the dining room is definitely an idea I'd considered earlier, just not interested in changing the backyard that much, and we love seeing through to the backyard when we walk into the house. The dimensions from the back (sink) wall to the range wall are 11'6", so I am just not sure what kind of island I can get in there?? Open to that idea for sure. @herbflavor - you seem to understand that the nook is the heart of the home. Considering the kitchen's 11'6" depth, how would you situate an island in that space while maintaining flow to access the back door (whether slider of single swing)? @Woody Vaughan or Shaun Fogarty - thank you! Out swing door would be nice, I am afraid that if it were a comfortable width, the final few inches would be exposed (no protective overhang - but I will double check that. @Buehl - Good points, ones that we have considered. At one point I was thinking about designing some hidden gates to keep the kids out of the kitchen (no matter where the range is located or how it is designed) - 2 little ones already and a third could be in the works, haha. Regarding the nook table, my plan is open. I was going to replace it at a minimum, but totally drop it in the event of a convincing design. Regarding railing, as I mentioned above it will be replaced with new railing or something else altogether. @Jan Moyer - Guilty as charged :). We do some design work on our own projects and I am very attracted to it, so I figured my own little project would be a great way to get some practice, feedback etc. I don't know why planning space is so much fun?? That being said, we have collaborated with some great designers on our projects and I figure at some point I will get one of them involved - great idea. Thank you....See MoreCustom house build - looking for kitchen design input
Comments (13)Just_janni thanks for your response. I actually feel like our design is very functional but I appreciate the perspective of others. The wall ovens are side opening so the landing zone for that is the counter to the right of the range top. That makes it easy to open with my left hand and grab the food with my right and pivot a step to place it on that countertop. I also don’t camp out in front of the ovens causing crowds, I put stuff in and pull stuff out and I’m gone. The fridge and freezer landing zone is the space left of the island sink as that will be my prep area so it’s all in one place. The microwave has a countertop below it for those needs. I wanted a clean up zone and I have a large one on the other side. The right side of the island is where I will store my every day dishes so that is the natural plating area for meals. I will also put my baking gear on that side of the range. That side won’t get as much use as the other side but it is a very large kitchen so it’s ok. I also didn’t want to have a bunch of stuff on that side because it’s the pathway to the laundry room and master suite. I think I will add a pantry door to the other side of the pantry, near garage/mudroom, so that is a walk through, and feel that will improve the flow....See MoreInput required for kitchen design
Comments (22)The corner....it would better, function-wise, if you made the upper corner a 90-degree angle as well instead of the diagonal. An "easy reach" cabinet would accomplish that. Not only is an easy reach easier to use, but it also gives you more "face" space in the corner. This is especially important because it's in the middle of your primary Prep Zone (the space b/w the sink and cooktop). Prep Zone...Your primary Prep Zone is between the sink and cooktop because it's the only workspace that has both direct water access (KEY for a successful Prep Zone) and is near the cooktop. The island won't work b/c there's no water and because it faces the wrong direction. To work as a truly functional Prep Zone, the island would, at the very least, need a prep sink, but it would be even better turned to face the cooktop. Islands that are to serve as a Prep Zone should have water and the long side should face the cooktop/range. You could accomplish that if you were willing to switch the sink and cooktop in your layout: Flank the cooktop with windows (down to the counter would be nice) Increase the depth of the left perimeter by 3" or so and put the Cleanup Zone over there (sink and DW) Add a prep sink to the island This has the added advantage of putting the cooktop and hood on an exterior wall, making it much easier to vent to the outside...See MoreInput for kitchen design in 650sf rental house
Comments (49)@jimandanne_mi Hi, Thanks for the questions! --Windows and doors are not there now. Reasons for the door/window locations: I don't want any windows on the North (privacy, charm, you'd have to see it). South windows bring in the winter sun and there is a seasonal creek 30' away, so will put in a deck. East there is a grove of oaks, which are very pretty. West is not private and plus it gets hot here in SoCal so we don't want afternoon summer sun coming in. -Support post is in the middle of the living room now (put on plan above) but it can be moved north along a straight line up to 6 ish feet from the north wall. -The only current interior wall is a double wall (Purple and red) and goes from N to S outside walls. The purple rectangle is the original building. Then a 'lean to' was built (shown in red) on the outside of the original. The west outside wall of the lean-to is 6' 2" high (shown in green). Thus I am limited to what I can do in the BA. We will be taking out the entire red wall that is right by the purple wall to gain a few more inches. Obviously we will be doing support to open up the purple/red walls for the bedroom. Also, the east and part of the north outside walls are the only place where you can enter at ground level. The south and west, you would have to take stairs to get up to the house. Maybe I'll take pics of the outside to make it more clear. Thanks again!...See Morecyc2001
