Need some color/finish guidance on my vintage-inspired kitchen!

Hi all! I'm a 26 year old architect in Baltimore.
So I'm finally doing the kitchen in my first house, a 1930's colonial revival. I want to keep true to the house's roots (also I love vintage everything), so I really want it to have a vintage feel, even though we're doing a few things like partially opening up the wall to create a sort of pass through/bar.
Input/opinions in general are welcome, but I would love color/finish advice. Because it is a very narrow galley kitchen, we're thinking white cabinets. The cabinets would all be inset, butt hinges, and pretty simple. Probably shaker style. Exact hardware TBD. Subway tile/dark grout on the walls, with a period style vent-a-hood stove vent. Soapstone counters. Currently planning on a black (?) big chill pro stove, and integrated fisher paykel fridge and dishdrawer. (I would have gone with a restored vintage stove, but don't have the budget for it currently).
So the floor.... I like the classic checkered look, but if we're spending so much on other stuff, I feel odd about going with vinyl flooring. Is there a better alternative? We're also considering various mosaic patterns, and possibly unglazed smaller black/white tile. I love a simple white hex mosaic floor with black accents, but I worry its too much white everywhere, and it won't be grounded.
In general, keep in mind I've been putting this together in sketchup, so patterns/colors are not exact. The alignment of patterns and everything is a little off.
Any advice?

Comments (6)Many people are mixing painted and stained cabinets within a project these days and the results can be stunning. In fact, it is not uncommon to mix wood species depending on whether or not the space can accept that kind of blending of woods. Flat panel doors and slab doors seem to more generally fit a contemporary style, but it certainly doesn't mean that EVERY flat panel installation looks contemporary. With the style you are looking to create, I think you can find good examples of both raised panel and flat panel that could be used. As for the budget, you can very likely fit a semi-custom mid-price point. My advise is don't count-out a brand that you feel is going to be too expensive because there are many price promotions going yet and also it is just more likley you can get a better deal today than a couple of years ago. Dream on the edge and scale back if or as necessary. If you know of a dealership that has a good reputation let them help you navigate the construction question. I have had no problems with that shade and light...the only thing that bothers me about it is that I screwed up the calculations and it is not centered between the hood and the walll.. :(. My ceilings are 8 feet and I also have the open shade above the sink and honestly I never really look up at them to catch any glare. My rationale too was not to have too many different shades/styles. You can see that the fitter and canopy on my sink pendant match the small stove light. All my light shades have the black stripe but they did not offer the stripe on the one over the sink. Comments (65)those silver mantles look wonderful. I saw a thing on the rustoleum website about using their spray on silvering and I think vinegar for a diy Mercury glass look. What at about some pine cones for the niches? If the have time I may gather a few and see how they look sprayed silver to go with my white depression glass. I have a few of the putz houses. (At least 50 years old). They were my favorites as a child. I used to buy those plaster white houses to paint yourself. I have a crazy number now and should put some out too. 6 years agoI got a wonderful 8" black and white matte ceramic tile for my mudroom in a 1914 Greek Revival in Philadelphia. I love it. It's glazed but it looks like it isn't, so nothing stains it. It took me a long time to find it and it wasn't expensive but I can't remember off the top of my head who made it. I had to get it from an obscure supplier but they happily sent me samples. I'll see if I have their info in my construction records.
I did see a picture on Gardenweb somewhere of a floor done by someone who cut marmoleum into 8" tiles and installed it on the diagonal. Looked fabulous but that had to be hard work!
If you're on a tight budget, VCT can look good and is dirt cheap. It replaced the VAT that came out in the 1930s and wouldn't unauthentic either, but it is harder to maintain than ceramic or marmoleum.

Is extending the hardwood out of the question?
