Kitchen 'refresh' finished! Some new, some old. Lots of pics.

Thanks to everyone here for great advice on this refresh of my 80's kitchen. We replaced the counters, sink, faucet, backsplash, and cooktop. Kept the cabinets but put some glass in a few and switched out some hardware. Kept the fridge and DW. I considered replacing the Thermador double ovens, but they work great and so now am considering them "vintage". Will happily provide details to anyone who is interested. Hope you like it, and many thanks again. What a wonderful forum!

Aha another Hamiltonian! We are new to Hamilton - love the architecture :) Well, if the kitchen is anything like the bathroom, it will be like an archeological dig. We had no fewer than *8* layers of floor in our bathroom. We stripped it all, except for the very last bottom layer, which we had some concerns about being made of asbestos. Now our bathroom floor is 1.5 inches lower. I need to stand on my tippy toes to see in the mirror, lol. OH woe the lack of insulation. We are freezing. Is the character worth it? Maybe...lol...no, it is. Maybe. In July ;) ;) ;)

Jesst, the colors are pretty light throughout the house. I thought about keeping it light in the kitchen, not that there's that much wall space in the atcual kitchen area, but in the eat in, there's a bit more - but this brick/rust color red keeps coming back in to play on the virtual painting site I went to - in the kitchen next to the cabinets, it looks good, not sure how it would go over in the eat in area though... Karin, thanks so much for your post - glad you were able to sleep on your reply and not have it keep you up at night - that's what's happening to me. Too much to think about, really. I honestly don't know the difference between paneling or t&g. Someone told me it could be either maple or birch, personally I wouldn't know the difference, but I am trying to learn. Why this house - many reasons, price, location, layout. As for the interior, I see a lot of potential, but prior to posting on this site, I saw the potential of painting it, at least the kitchen, not so much the den. The wood in the den is nice, don't get me wrong, I do like it, and as I've mentioned elsewhere, to me, it's warm and inviting (with the right kind of furniture, not the crap the people have in there now) and it reminds me of my Grandparents cottage in upstate NY where I'd spend summers as a kid (they had it for over 50yrs) What I don't like is that plate rail at the top, and I can't come up with any solutions on what to do with it - THAT bothers me a LOT. It's a dust collector in my eyes, not a plate rail or shelf. As you mentioned: "I can see two things wrong with how it presently looks: one is that no one who's previously owned it has ever been able to think of anything that goes with wood" That's what I'm afraid of with me, and which is why I'm here looking for ideas. I'm going to be only the 3rd owner, and as you can see from the pics, the current owners (CO) haven't done squat, nor do they have squat. I'm not really a blue or green person, I've always been scared of color and usually go with beiges, though I was convinced to venture in to golden yellows in my daughters room and loved it. Don't get me wrong, I love color, and admire many homes I've looked at with the colors they've used, it's just me, being afraid of what to pick and how it will look and the possibility of me hating it (and second guessing myself along the way) I hate making a mistake and wasting money. As I mentioned to Jesst, the virtual website I tried out with cabinets similar to the color in the kitchen, I liked this brick rusty red color on the walls - very unlike me, but would definitely think about putting that color in there. If I had to pick between a blue and green, it would be green, but otherwise, I'd be gearing more towards the golds, yellow, beiges, tans, etc. The house was painted not too long ago and I probably wouldn't change the colors in there, with the exception of the YELLOW that's screaming out. I'm just very surprised I can't find more info on what I'm looking for out there. It seems people just aren't keeping (and showing) their paneled rooms - only their painted paneled rooms. I've looked on TOH website and others, nothing really to mention. But not to worry, I won't be delving in to the den right away after closing, kitchen will be top priority. The only thing I know I'll be wanting to do in there is rip that chair rail out (when I find a suitable replacement idea) and somehow make that built in have a pullout for a laptop computer so we can use it as a desk. I was not specific enough sorry. We are refinishing our old floor and we have added a lot of new flooring (due to cat urine from prev owners) We were going to stain the floors before putting on the final protective coating which in our case we have chosen "street shoes" a water based very durable coating, from what we have heard. We were going to use English Chesnut as the stain but feel it is too dark for the second floor. I have been able to see many pictures of "Natural" stain on the internet. But we are considering no stain just the clear floor with coating of the finish to protect the floors. In our last home I believe the red oak was sanded and then poly oil based was applied. I did not like how orange it became over time. That is why I am not wanting to use poly this time. So I am looking for any pics of floors that were sanded and then not stained, not even with "Natural" and then were sealed with something other than the yellowing poly. I hope this explains it a little better. Thanks for your help!! Amy

You all are INCREDIBLY kind! I wish you could have seen this house when I bought it in 1986. It looked like a little red school house with white trim and black shutters. The back yard was a ravine with dying trees in it, and the shed was next to the house where the garage is now. There were no gardens...I was younger then and dove in and worked hard as I LOVED the house from the moment I saw it, with the blazing wood stove in the kitchen,(now in the cellar) which had dark home made cabinets and 24" of counter space, and a vinyl 'brick' floor. Oldhouse - It makes me think of your journey that you are on with your house now, although mine only dates to 1937. I have touched every square inch of this place and added some square feet! It'll be 25 years that I have had it this December, and I love it even more today, as it's perfect for me and my doggie kids. I have truly enjoyed working in the house and yard all of those years. It sure doesn't happen over night. So anyone who thinks that it's nice; I am very grateful that my love for my home shows. It's been a long time coming. My taste has been 'honed' over the years, from the blue and pink of the 80's, to what it is today, thank goodness! And, I know that I talk about eBay and Craigslist often, but they have helped me immensely with wonderful unique items. THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR THE WONDERFUL COMMENTS ABOUT MY HOME!

It's beautiful! I love that you were able to keep your cabinets and appliances and still create a kitchen that looks all brand new. Your choices on everything (counters, tile, hardware) are very pretty.

Wow! Great Job! What a transformation without a total demolition! I love the counters and the backsplash tile. And your island has a really great configuration, looks very comfy too! Think of the money you saved and the waste you kept out of the landfill!

What a great, wonderful difference! Very elegant and I don't think anyone would realize the whole kitchen wasn't new.

Believe me, with the oven hassles I've been through in the last 2 yrs, if you have ovens that work great, I think you should definitely keep them!

Beautiful!! I really looks like you have an entirely new kitchen. We have the exact same Thermador Ovens in our 80's kitchen - Sadly, the top oven doesn't hold any temp other than broil & the bottom oven is completely dead. It's actually what got us started on our remodel.

I've wanted to ask who your granite source was -- I've pretty much decided to follow in your footsteps but am coming up empty-handed down here in Florida looking for slabs

Great facelift! I am so jealous of you guys who have a decent base to start with and just need to do refreshing!

So that is Jet Mist? I too was fooled that it was soapstone!
What faucet is that? It looks alot like what I got- Perrin and Rowe?

Wow! Thank you so much for the positive feedback. I must admit it's a little intimidating to post a finished kitchen here because so many of them are so gorgeous. It's really nice to hear that so many of you like the changes.
Details:
Counters: Jet Mist (aka Virginia Mist) honed and enhanced, dupont edge on island and eased edge on perimeter
Cooktop: Wolf 36 inch five burner gas (we switched from electric to lp gas)
Downdraft: Thermador
Backsplash: 3x6 white lanka beveled subway tile, 3x6 breil chair rail tile
Faucet: Blanco "Grace", chrome with sidespray
Sink: Elkay undermount single bowl, 18 gauge stainless
Hardware: Richelieu 3 inch chrome pulls, HD chrome knobs, glass knobs on lower doors but can't remember source

Forgot to answer your Jet Mist question. I got it from Marble and Granite in Milford, CT. Perhaps if you call them they might be able to recommend a supplier in your area. Good luck!

Pardon me for getting to the party so late! Jeanteach, I really love your new kitchen! Everything works together so nicely. I especially like the countertops and the pillow tile on the backsplash. And. is that a sky light or artificial lighting over your island? Either way, it's wonderful. Two thumbs up!

Marthavila: yes, it is a skylight, which brightens up the kitchen so much.
Squigs: I almost fainted when I saw that microwave at Target, because it was the perfect color. My husband was with me at the time and could not get over my reaction! Then, months later I found the toaster oven from the same manufacturer, also in red, and was thrilled. It's the little things!
