What type of seed to use?

Hi. I need to do some overseeding (and also new
seeding near the side of my house), and was thinking of using Pennington professional products, as I assume they are better than the
regular product that I can get at Home Depot or wherever. I was
told by a local lawn care company that Tall Fescue and Bluegrass are ideal for my yard. I'm in southern CT.

I think that one of the fescue/bg mix is my best bet (at least for the
new areas that I need to seed).

But for the areas that I'm overseeding, perhaps I should just
use bluegrass (to try and get the nicer dark green) as the lawn
already has a mix of rye/fescue/bluegrass? Will it look 'funny' if there's tiny areas of a nice bg coming in all over? Should I stick with mixes when overseeding?

And should I stick with 'regular' seed that I find at Home Depot, Amazon, etc... that get good reviews?

Call The Hogan Company and ask them to advise you on a good mix for your area. Pennington, Scotts etc is all junk, old cultivars.

Mallard KBG sounds good but where does one find it? I can't even google a vendor!

I "third" the other two. You might consider going with a deep mulch made from a shredded material. It will be soft on the dog's feet, absorb everything he can give it, should never smell bad, and should never get muddy. By deep I mean at least 5 cm and as much more than that as you can afford. 10 to 15 would be fine. Mulch, being an organic material, will support all the microbes you need to cover the smells of doggie waste materials.

Briefly 1. Get soil test (www.loganlabs.com) 2. Put down preemergent now and kill growing weeds with spray herbicides. 3. Treat weeds and grass as lawn, mow accordingly. 4. Amend soil and try to add organic matter every month. 5. Kill everything in summer with Round-Up. 6. Kill everything 2-3 weeks later. 7. Seed lawn with appropriate cool season grass in early fall. Tall fescue is a good choice for your area. You could also blend in some KBG with TF if you want. Also, answer these questions. How much shade does your lawn get? Can you irrigate the whole yard? What's the square footage?

I'm not an expert here but I think they will need to know a little more detail. 1. How much sun does your lawn get? Sounds like it's shady. 2. What is the approximate size of the yard? Elite seeds are expensive, but will give you a much better product. If the yard is small it won't really be that much more money for the best seed around.Just make sure to get seeds with very little to no weed content. 3. Are you planning to water and fertilize regularly? Some types of seed are more demanding. 4. How much soil do you need? If you don't need much, I think the bagged soil at the chain retailers will be fine. If you need more have some delivered. Hope this helps get you started till the pro's get involved.

I agree with the two previous entries. But also...I suggest using the aerator as a 'tool' merely to 'lift' soil up to the surface, maybe as many as two passes over a moist lawn, after it's been mowed short (to reduce interference w/ equipment & increase user visability). And then....once all of the soil cores all over the lawn have dried to a large extent, use a genuine SLICE SEEDER to cut vertically into the soil, and drop the grass seed into those cuts, while at the same time pulverizing all of those aforementioned soil cores. I myself like to implement the use of endomycorrhyzae spores when I 'dissect' lawns like this...but doing so pretty much neccessitates the lawn-owner to a PERMANENT shift toward ALL ORGANICS in terms of turf food & weed control, or else the beneficial spores will likely die for the lack of protein that needs to be spoonfed to them, in the manner that corn meal (etc) does. A good, successful seed job is all about SEED TO SOIL CONTACT, first and foremost ! Generally, other considerations to think about, are erosion potential (both wind and water), weed invasiveness potential, moisture loss potential, and the length of time to mature before freeze / frost cycles begin.

What are the characteristics of Mallard KBG that make it desirable to you? I'm not familiar with the cultivar.

Many consider KBG the king of grass. Nice dark color, vigorous spreading and thus damage-correcting. It does require sun (6 hrs/day), watering, fertilizing, and occasional "thatching". Midnight and Midnight II have been mainstay varieties but have recently been downgraded due a susceptibility to powdery mildew. In a separate reply I'll send the University of Kentucky's recent recommendation. There's always a risk with a mono-culture, so a mix is preferred. Note that you may be buying a "coated" seed, now a common practice among seed packagers. Such is usually only disclosed in fine print on the contents label and is often 50% of the package weight.

U. of Ky KBG recommendations

1. Keeneland, 2. Blue Note, Skye, or Nu Chicago. 5. Sudden Impact, 6. Legend or Midnight, 8. Rush, 9. Empire

These may not be easy to find, but here is a source that offers many seed cultivars, bluegrass and others.

j4c11... i guess i was looking at the Pennington product sheet and it sounded good to me. but product sheets are probably not reliable.

if i were serious, I'd look up the ntep results but Im not so its not worth my time.
