Thanks for the advice flora. Its not too late for me to reconsider. One of the reasons I'm hesitant to use wires fixed to eye bolts is because I'm nervous abuot drilling and anchoring to the bricks in the chimney. I'm worried about permanently damaging the chimney and was looking for the least risky means of attaching to it without damage. I'm willing to be convinced that my fears are ungrounded. How does one securely anchor eyebolts to brick? I have no experience with such things. I was also concerned that in order to make steel wires taut it would put considerable stress on the anchorage of the bolts. If anybody can link to pictures of the process of securing eye bolts to brick I would greatly appreciate it. As far as rotting of the cedar goes, I guess I'd figured that it wouldn't do much harm if the bottom portion of the trellis began to rot after a couple of years. Shouldn't the tree be pretty well anchored itself by then? Its not like gradual rotting of the bottom portion of the trellis would cause the whole thing to disintegrate, and it would still have some anchorage points to the chimney. Making the trellis doesn't seem difficult. Securing it to the chimney, and the prospect of it making it more difficult to care for the tree are the things I'm more concerned about. Any thoughts?

Maybe there are still a few dormant buds toward the base of some canes. Take such a cane and knock off all the sprouting buds and try to root that. Even if you find no buds, there are secondary and tertiary buds at nodes anyway, and so when you knock off the main sprout (which came from the primary bud) it can re-sprout from one of these backup buds. Plants have these backup buds in case of freeze or the like. One of the dormant canes I rooted this spring spouted too early and that sprout died, but I kept it around and last week it re-sprouted from a backup bud and is growing well now. Scott

It doesn't really matter, one trunk or two, right or left. All that really matters is pruning properly and spreading the leaves out to intercept as much light as possible. I like your T trellis idea. What I'd do differently is have a third wire down the center. I'd put both canes on that wire one running each direction or both running each way. It's alright to have two canes on one wire. Then the outside wires would be to support the new canes growing out each way. This helps some to avoid wind damage to new shoots. But your plan is just as good.

Your grapes will be fine. It's normal to remove 80-90% of a grape plant. From now on, prune in the spring, just as the buds break on the very ends of the branches. In the meantime, take an hour or so and study up on how to prune grapes for fruit bearing. I'd probably put in some posts and some strong wire trellis to support some of the weight of the plant and to keep at least a portion of the weight off the deck. By the end of next summer, that plant will be enormous... even bigger than this year. And next year, you will wait and prune it the next spring.
