If you're looking for LED recessed lighting, it is extremely difficult to beat Cree. The only other brand that is worth considering is the Sylvania RT6. Having a single transformer in one location works for under cabinet lighting since the total length of low voltage wiring is small (typically For recessed lighting, the total wiring length will be much longer since the lights will most likely not be daisy chained in series. The total wattage requirements will most likely exceed 100W, requiring a larger transformer and thicker wiring. There are tables available for low voltage wiring lengths and thickness. The voltage drop across the longest run may also be too great for the light to work properly. In addition, the transformer would need to be in an accessible location to be changed out. Most low voltage recessed lights (LED included) will not supply enough lighting, unless you have quite a number (eg - 1 per ft or more). Assuming an entire LV setup with 1 or more transformers You will need to calculate the number of lights needed, the length of low voltage wiring, wire gauge, number of transformers. DC voltage lines suffer more voltage drop than AC lines. That's also the main reason why line voltage is AC. If you're using halogen lights, the wires need to be fairly thick due to the amount of current drawn. The above configuration is highly impractical. There is a danger that the light fixture itself could fall if fastened to ceiling tile. OK, everyone got me sufficiently paranoid to contact Juno. The tech rep responded as such to my question about using a dimmer designed for a magnetic transformer on a dedicated outlet for a magnetic transformer: "Electrically that arrangement would work. Since you state that the outlet is located in a remote location, and presumably will be dedicated to only provide dimmable power for the T550N transformer you should be OK. The only reservation I have about this type of setup, is the possibility of some other electrical device being plugged into a wall outlet wired off a dimmer. It might be a good idea to use a single receptacle instead of a duplex to minimize the chance of this happening. Perhaps even labeling the outlet "for low voltage lighting only" or something of that nature as an added precaution. You will have to install a cord and plug on the transformer. If you have not ordered the T550N already, you can order it with a 6 foot cord and plug option. You would order the transformer as catalog# T550N-BL-CP6. Otherwise you can attach your own cordset." I apoligize for not getting all the facts beforehand. Would those who recommended trashing the existing systems or felt there was imminent danger of fire consider this sufficient or are there still logical objections?

In consultation with my supplier, I come up with the attached diagram showing my thoughts about wiring the kitchen lighting (part). The green wires are coming from the basement through a wall between the kitchen and a closet. There will be dimmer switches in that wall (two shown). The 110 volt wires then continue up through the wall to a shelf in the closet where the transformers will be located. I was going to put them inside the wall, but my supplier said that that's not allowed. The low voltage wires then continue up through the wall and through the ridge beam and then run along the top of the rafter to a hole drilled through the rafter and down to the monorail track. Question: do I have to put a box on the underside of the rafter, or can there be a tube attached to the rafter through which the wires run? Anyway, the monorail will have two circuits, one with down task lighting and the other with lights shining up to the ceiling. These would be independently controlled. Another, similar, monorail would be over the kitchen counter with a similar pair of lighting circuits. The dimmers and transformers for these circuits are not shown, but would be next to the ones which are shown.
