Jude the Obscure -story behind the name
Comments (60)I personally love tragic stories, especially star crossed lovers. The sadder the better..lol. Beautiful happy stories are nice but we always remember the sad ones the most. It is perhaps in many ways cathartic. I have been working on a series of paintings that depict tragic couples in world history eg Romeo and Juliet, Tristan and Isolde, Deidre and Naoise etc. They are still in the initial stages. Having said that, I actually didn't realize that Jude is a man. I always thought it would be a woman for some reason. I will try to read this book in the future. Overall, I think it is proper to have roses named after people or characters. For me it adds a certain depth to the rose. Thanks True blue, I will remember their stories when I do get a chance to paint them one day....See MoreAs a climber: Jude the Obscure or Lady of Shalott?
Comments (28)Three years ago I moved Jude to the back of my garden and it hasn't done much so far. But as I recall, it took it quite a few years to show its stuff in the earlier spot it was in, years and years and lots and lots of unplanned pruning because I was always getting stabbed with its vicious thorns as I went by. But it had no disease and was very vigorous. Maybe I don't have the hang of pruning it. To tell the truth, I didn't like the fragrance of this rose at first, although then I grew to like it. I still don't think it is has a graceful or even an attractive habit. It does have that beautiful cup-shaped blossom, but the flowers never open up and develop in the interesting way real old-fashioned cup-shaped roses do, which is a bit disappointing, and they are useless to bring in the house. I am contemplating replacing it with a real climber -- or maybe an elderberry trained as a climber, but will give it another year. Sigh....See MoreQueen of Sweden & Jude the Obscure shade tolerance
Comments (23)I agree that Austin promotions should be taken with a grain of salt, and Nik is right that they are usually written for conditions in England which differ a lot throughout most of the US. Darlow's Enigma is indeed a terrific rose for part shade, though not a cutting rose. Among the ones Austin lists that I have found good for shade would be Bonica, who is a non-stop pink bloomer all summer in part shade - a fabulous rose, but also not a cutting rose. Teasing Georgia also blooms OK in part shade, but it would be happier in sun. I have two Queen of Sweden bushes, one in full sun and one in part shade, and there is a big difference in blooms between the two. The one in full sun blooms off and on all summer (not a huge bloomer but decent), and the one in part shade throws off a bloom or two here and there, some years not blooming at all. It's also a good foot or two shorter and just a wimpier plant in general. Roses that do better in part sun in general would be the hybrid musks. I particularly like Wilhelm that adds a deep red-pink bloom in mostly shade off and on all summer and gets big. I have a lot of hybrid musks in my shade areas and they seem reasonably happy. Comments (25)Wow, seeing this thread makes me want to replace mine that died. I used to have a ton of the DAs and other similar roses along our upper fence. But it was way too shady. Most of the roses just sat there for yrs doing nothing. Since we had to do the septic re-do last yr and I gained a lot of open space, I've been digging those roses out of that fence area and replanting them in full sun. The last section I dug out was the yellow roses, and my JTO was totally non-existant. Must've just died and whatever was left probably got raked out of there a yr or more ago, and I just didn't notice. I'm working on the last DA bed with the yellow/apricots. Maybe I should replace it. I didn't quite have enough DA-style roses to fill the bed up. Hmmm... should I or shouldn't I?...See MoreEmbothrium
