Comments (33)mdrew522, I know I saw it recently, but can't find the location. Magazines are kind of an addiction. I'll keep looking. As typical with BHG publications, this kitchen appears more than once. The first time I saw it was Renovation Style magazine Summer 2010. The article name is Expanded with Imagination. They featured the whole house. It's a saltbox from Nantucket, MA. It's a great issue if you can get your hands on it. Try checking Half Price Books. They typically sell old magazines for a $1. Here's some info: Cabinetry: Custom Scandia Kitchens Inc, Bellingham, MA Cabinet Paint: BM Vanilla Milkshake Island Paint: BM Garden Oasis Marble and Granite Counters: Stone Passions, Bellingham, MA Hanging Light Fixtures: Rejuvenation Range Hood: Best by Broan Refrigerator/Cooktop: Sub-Zero/Wolf Sink Faucet: Perrin & Rowe by Rohl Fabric for Window Seat: Pembroke Cascade Rogers and Goffigon, Ltd Breakfast Table: Walker Creek Furniture, Essex, MA Chairs: Pottery Barn Hammered Sink at Wet Bar: The Water Closet, Nantucket Flooring: Tile Showcase, Watertown, MA...See MoreIsland preference (match cabinets or accent color)
Comments (53)We just recently did a remodel/redesign of our existing kitchen that is only 6 years old. I have always liked the look of a contrasting accent island from the perimeter cabinets, but wasn't sure if I had the courage to take that risk. I also worried that it might date the kitchen too soon after spending such a huge amount of money, but my youngest DD finally put it into perspective when she said it's basically the same as only putting out your best linens and dishes for company. Why worry about about 10 or 12 years from now (I may not even be here tomorrow) when I could be loving and enjoying it today? Since we were remodeling the living room and adding a fireplace, as well, we thought we would have the cabinet makers do the fireplace surround in the same finish as the Island to have the areas complement each other. Please overlook the new laundry room door that hasn't been painted and without knob and also the ceiling still needs to be painted. Perimeter Cabinets are Oak with Mahogany stain, the Island is Glazed Ivory. Comments (29)Gray flooring is very trendy - which means it will become the dreaded "dated". While light gray as a neutral will always be useful, the extreme over use of gray will turn on itself - just as over use of oak did. If this was a cheap laminate gray floor with a limited lifespan - no big deal (except the waste in the landfill) but you had better love this expensive floor 10 years from now when the HGTV crowd will say "yuck - look at all that gray" - just like they say "Yuck, look at all that oak" now. If you will love it, go ahead. I have my oak kitchen which I like just fine. However, a natural wood floor will add color and will go with just about any style thrown at it. It is best if one applies the trendy colors to easily changed surfaces - like paint for walls, decor, curtains, upholstery and even a backsplash if it is not a huge expense. Listen to SJ - she is a flooring expert. The gray, gray rooms just looked washed out - especially when all the new design pics I am seeing are showing color....See MoreNeed cabinet color to match existing countertop
Comments (18)The kitchens above don't look better than your kitchen imo. At all. Effect of newer on top of older..and cooler gray paint color does a disservice next to warm finishes. They did take care of it some with styling (chairs upholstery, lights) They look okay, but I don't see any reason to repeat them. And I'd repaint walls in each one of these. I think also gray-blue color on your walls makes other finishes more prominent. Because it contrasts with them . Of course it can be I read it wrong on my monitor. If I do read it right[-I'd paint walls either a color in cream realm-or would go for much stronger, deeper color. You can switch out a backsplash. If you really dislike your granite-you can change it. Won't be more expensive than painting the cabinets that look pretty good to me. Maybe new hardware? The floors do lock you in somewhat( as does granite, as does backsplash) And so they do in all the other kitchens you posted. They decided to paint nevertheless-their business. But it didn't make for better kitchens. You c a n paint-but the question is whether you should. I wouldn't, and if yes-wouldn't choose white, not until I'm changing other elements. It's a nice kitchen As for bathroom-yes you can paint there, given the countertop is more uniform, makes picking out the color easier..can be warmer white, or maybe some other color. Or you can leave as is. But it seems like it'd be easier to paint, than kitchen. Also a lot of white existing already -sinks, tub, etc..once you have repeating colors it's earier. Bar I love your bar area, wouldn't touch it. If you really want a change-than not a white but some deep rich color. Dark green? Seal? But the wood is too nice there, frankly. Love the red you chose. You have a nice house..it has many traditional elements, and maybe combination of finishes you don't prefer right now, but it's cool and full of personality. I'd start small-repaint the walls in the kitchen, add hardware, switch out backsplash, then look into countertops. Maybe you'll love new lighting somewhere. I understand the wish to change-but paint wouldn't be something that would work better in this kitchen. I like it as is more than white kitchens you've posted. Pro painting-would be more expensive than new countertops I think, and then you'll have to baby it more. If it was a color you really love, and you prefer introducing it rather than changing countertops ..I believe certain rich bues might look nice with gold tones in granite etc. You love color so might as well go bold. Maybe it has potential to work. In this case, I'd do big samples and try, look at them in different light. See whether you're drawn to this look. Sorry for the long post..thank you if you made it till here:)...See MoreRelated Professionals
