Excited to start growing roses, starting with a few David Austins
Comments (4)As far as the plants you are holding off on, they should be fine another week or two in their pots. Just make sure you keep them watered. It would be much more disturbing to them to plant them and later dig them up. Also, while there is no real risk of repotting them, I just don't think it is worth the trouble for a couple of weeks. As far as books, I have the Classic Rose by Peter Beales. It is pretty good. If you can find one, David Austins, rose books are pretty good, they concentrate more on English Roses, but they have some pretty good advice on general things. I picked one up from the mid 90s at a Half Price books for $4. Now, there is also his book "The Rose", but it is quite pricey and more about individual roses. As for love song, I typically plant my roses along my house about 18-24 inches back from the slab so your distance is fine. Enjoy Love Song, I planted it earlier this year and it is on its second flush. Wish I could help in regard to your particular area, but I am no where near you....See MoreQuestion about growing David Austin Roses at Austin TX
Comments (7)By all means, do plant them in your garden now. Make sure you water them in well. Since it is so warm there, I'd provide them with some afternoon shade for about a week. Place a lawn chair over them or buy some shade cloth and rig up some stakes to attach it to. Since it is so warm, keep an eye on the roses so they don't dry out during the next week or two--but don't drown them either. That can kill them as easily as too little water can. You have some beauties there. Good luck! Kate...See MoreAre there any lavender Austin roses?
Comments (22)David Austin may have tried and failed to produce a lavender rose(s). With his reported statement that ONLY Japanese and Americans like lavender roses, he therefore did not pursue the wants of this market? Come on! With the shekels we Americans shell out for Austins, surely any additional revenue he garnered would have caused him to pursue satisfying our lavender rose love affair, if he could have produced a satisfactory, marketable one. Anything David Austin says needs to be, "interpreted". I love Austin roses, but he is not high up on my list of favorite persons, especially since he is removing excellent older Austins from his distribution program so he can market/improve revenues by selling only chosen, newer varieties. Moses...See MoreGrowing Lavender Crush as a shrub?
Comments (11)Yes, wowza, Ben! It sure would be nice to grow Lavender Crush in its full glory. So fanning the canes out horizontally works beautifully if you have a really big space, but since I don’t, I’m wondering if the canes are flexible enough to snake and criss-cross up a ~4-foot-wide trellis at ~45 degree angles. That could maybe be an alternative to the shrub approach in the space that I have. The shrub approach seems to work reasonably well, but I think it wouldn’t allow for lateral breaks to maximize blooms?...See Morewantonamara Z8 CenTex
