Question about growing David Austin Roses at Austin TX

Dear Rose Experts,
I need some help on growing David Austin Roses. We passed by Tyler TX last weekend and I bought some Austin Roses. Here are the list:
Lady Shalott
Golden Celebration
Claire Austin
Heritage
Queen of Sweden
Graham Thomas Climbing
The Generous Gardener Climbing

They all look strong and healthy. I soak the root in water overnight and plan to plant them today. I have a couple of questions here:
1.Is it too hot to plant them in the ground now?
2. If yes, should I just plant them in the pots? But I don't see why this can be different from planting them directly on the ground.

By all means, do plant them in your garden now. Make sure you water them in well. Since it is so warm there, I'd provide them with some afternoon shade for about a week. Place a lawn chair over them or buy some shade cloth and rig up some stakes to attach it to.

Since it is so warm, keep an eye on the roses so they don't dry out during the next week or two--but don't drown them either. That can kill them as easily as too little water can.

Thank you for the quick response. I will definitely provide some afternoon shades for them.
Can I plant them at places that only have morning sunshine?

I'm NOT in a tropical climate -- far, far drier. But what Nik said: nikthegreek(9b/10a E of Athens, Greece) What the roses may find stressful as plants is not the heat or humidity but the lack of winter coolness That rang true for me. While not tropical, here in coastal Southern California, we also have No Winter Chill. In that situation, Austin roses that were perfectly well-behaved elsewhere morphed here into Jolly Green Giants ... growing 12- 14-ft. tall, and blooming only at the very top. If we cut them down, they responded by hunkering down and growing back to 12-ft., to produce one large bloom or cluster. After a few seasons of that, we had to acknowledge the advice we had received that these were not the ideal roses for our conditions. We still grow a few Austins . . . Golden Celebration is great here (but would blackspot for you). Prospero is one of my all-time favorites, as is Belle Story, and my DH loves Cymbaline.

As far as the plants you are holding off on, they should be fine another week or two in their pots. Just make sure you keep them watered. It would be much more disturbing to them to plant them and later dig them up. Also, while there is no real risk of repotting them, I just don't think it is worth the trouble for a couple of weeks. As far as books, I have the Classic Rose by Peter Beales. It is pretty good. If you can find one, David Austins, rose books are pretty good, they concentrate more on English Roses, but they have some pretty good advice on general things. I picked one up from the mid 90s at a Half Price books for $4. Now, there is also his book "The Rose", but it is quite pricey and more about individual roses. As for love song, I typically plant my roses along my house about 18-24 inches back from the slab so your distance is fine. Enjoy Love Song, I planted it earlier this year and it is on its second flush. Wish I could help in regard to your particular area, but I am no where near you.

Rebecca- your roses are gorgeous but so much work. I live in Massachusetts. It is so difficult to even dig a hole 10 inches deep with all the rock, boulders and ledge so I try to buy only own root roses. I have gotten some wonderful own root roses from DA and have some more scheduled for delivery next week. I hope they add more own root to their collections. I recently ordered 'Queen of Sweden' and 'Windermere' which is by far my healthiest DA rose and covers herself with delicate soft blush pink blooms from early summer till fall. She is cane hardy in my Z5b-6a garden. The only negative is lack of the "to die for" strong perfume scent that Austins are so known for. sharon

It's on Peter Schneider's Custom Propagation list. I'd go that route if you can't find it elsewhere and if it looks like something other than Belle Story. I'd look at HelpMeFind to compare--if it's not, you can always buy one.

I've found that a lot of roses prefer only morning sunshine, at least in my very warm climate. 4-6 hours of sunshine seems adequate, especially if you have hot summers that are hard on roses.

If you can tend them in the ground as well as you would tend them if you had them in pots, just plant them in the ground they will be better off. They will need constant watering at first but obviously less than if they were in pots. Providing total shade for the first few days is a good idea.

Dears,
I am here to report the progress of Austin Roses. I planted them in the ground and they are all doing great. I need to thank for the cloudy and rainy weather we have been blessed these days.
Also thank you all for the advice.
