And yet another Val update...

Val had a vet and farrier appointment this morning. I meant to take a picture but it was pouring down rain when I got up and continued to rain all morning while we were at the vet. It was raining even harder when it was time to load him and go home, so had to wait about 45 minutes longer.

Val had problems with his feet. The soles of his hooves were real thin and one coffin bone....that is the wedge shaped bone inside the hoof, was a tiny smidgen lower than the other. When horses founder, this bone actually can drop and rotate and grow out the bottom of the hoof. So he has worn corrective shoes called "rockers". He had another set of x-rays today, and his hooves look so good, he no longer has to wear the rockers and was put in a wide, flat shoe. That was a savings of $75 right there, even though I'm okay with the rockers if they help him, and obviously they did because he no longer has to wear them, and the soles of his hooves are much thicker. The vet and the farrier were really pleased with his progress....and I was too, of course.

It's not like we saved any money though because he had to have a treatment for a summer sore. I have had horses for 61 years and have never had a summer sore....leave it to Val to have one. It is caused by flies, and they will find a little place, like a nick, and actually lay eggs in there. I have doctored every little spot on him twice a day, and even sometimes I will go out in the pasture and doctor him again. I keep him sprayed and I clean his stall, where he spends the night, every day, and bed him on shavings. I have never taken better care of a horse than this one....and he is a constant worry to me. He cut his leg on March 22. I kept it wrapped until May 15, and it was a little place about an inch long. The place where he got the summer core was a little spot the size of my fingernail, on his knee.

The vet sedated him again, and gave him an injection of a steroid, ivermectrin, and an antibiotic in the spot. It wasn't big, but I didn't want to take any chances. He gave me some thick salve to put on it. ("Gave" is a misnomer....that little treatment was $125 and the two rounds of sedation brought the vet part of the bill to $284. But I just want him to get better.) Both the farrier and vet remarked on how good he looks now. I will take a photo tomorrow to show you.
