Design Dilemma hallway

Hall and bathroom flooring

We are in the beginning stages of making a remodel plan. We currently have 8"x8" white tile floor in the front hall and in the hallway and bath in the kids' end of the house. (Did I mention it's white? We have three kids and three dogs. And it's white.) So...the bathroom needs to be redone desperately. We're seizing the moment and replacing this miserable white tile floor through the hall and bathroom at the same time. But, I'm at a loss. I have lots of idea for vanities and tile in the bath, lighting and fixtures as well. But the flooring is making me lose sleep. I keep coming back to brick. I'm interested in something that is NOT of the moment, that is NOT gray, and that will stand up to daily use and abuse. All rooms off the tiled areas are wood, a 3/5/7 oak that's stained a medium color. It's timeless and perhaps a little old fashioned, but works well for us and our house and furnishings. We have a mix of ikea, antiques, hand me downs, slip covers and squishy sofas for deep couch sitting. Warm colors abound here, nothing cool or slick (too much dog hair and too many kids for that!). I'm posting a picture of the front hall, the hall with the bathroom off it, and the hideous tile itself. We moved in nine years ago, and we're just not getting around to replacing! Thanks for any and all suggestions.

A tile that mimics natural stone and a few shades lighter than your wood floor would look great. When looking at products make sure their hardness rating is PEI 4 or 5 (both rated for commercial use), ceramic or porcelain. Your tiles look to be 12x12, not 8x8. Sizes of tile to consider are 12x24, 16x16 or 18x18, I wouldn't go any larger.

Thanks for the advice, Cinar Interiors! So, what I'm hearing you say amidst all that solid info is that perhaps brick flooring / brick veneer is not my best bet as it's not as story as I need it to be? Thank you again!

Hi there. I used 12x24". I got my first look at these at a RBC showroom. I ordered them through Nebraska furniture Mart near me that carried some RBC tile lines. RBC only sells to the trades I believe. Nebraska Furniture Mart special order them for me from RBC. I DYI'd the tile job. If I had it to over again I would have used a larger grout space to hide my slightly uneven lipage.

The tile is vinyl...she can't paint the "grout". To me wall color reads a little too much on the blue side, it needs more of a yellow undertone to go with your tub & vanity top. I think the clean white can work for trim and vanity, but only if you bring in more of the creamy/tan colors. I'd just stick with a fairly monochromatic theme-no prints because then you're really stuck with a 'theme'. You can bring in a print with wall art. I'd go more with texture than print, however. In our main bath reno, we have the same tub configuration. We put in white/gray marble tiles with a light grout. The tiles have a touch of tan in them also. I went with a blue wall color-reminiscent of beach glass, and all white trim. We put up beadboard on the ceiling where there used to be a flurescent light tube box built in. I used brush silver accessories and bright white towels. For the shower curtain I chose a shimmery blue one from Ikea. I don't have a 'theme' other than ahhhhh=it's just very calming to walk in there. I do have a stone Buddha and a couple of small shadow boxes of Asian coins. In any case, I'd definitely get a different shower curtain-that one just does not work with your floor.

I am wondering if I should just take my multipurpose tool and cut out the plywood piece towards the door jam. Then put the t molding over that. I think there is a t molding that i can use that would go from vinyl plank flooring to a lower floor.

She seems very determined - I wonder what is so attractive to her down there? This is coming from someone who referes to our walk-in closet as "Charlie's bedroom." A few years ago during a particularly bad thunderstorm, our dog hunkered down in our closet. I felt bad so put an old towel down for him so he didn't have to lay on the hardwood. Fast forward a couple of weeks and I moved his bed in there as apparently that was now his bedroom. My DH just shakes his head.

I may have skimmed over the part of you mentioning pavers. Porcelain pavers are great and hold up extremely well. I'd prefer to lean you towards porcelain due to kids and dogs. Less maintenance and easier to keep clean.
Marazzi Tile sells a product called Urban District BRX which comes 2x8 or 4x8. Fantastic colors. Not sure if Home Depot sells this brand of Marazzi.
