Advice when seeking bids for HVAC
Comments (2)Having house plans and all those insulation and window factors will be helpful for the dealer to do the calc (by having them handy). You're looking at good systems. Where are you located in the US?...See MoreHVAC bid - apples, oranges, and bananas!
Comments (15)Thanks for the dealer recommendation, ryan! I'll certainly look them up. So I talked with the HVAC guy. He can certainly put a 4-5" media filter on the unit. I'm glad you asked about that, ryan, because we're battling mold issues. He did not do a load calculation. He was using our current system as a sort of baseline, and was adjusting where he thought it could improve. He is happy to do a load calculation, but it takes a lot of time, so he'll charge me for it unless we go with his company. Sounds fair to me. His estimate of our needs included the fact that all the ducting is in our large, unconditioned crawl space. There is a vent down there, which is always closed, but we're thinking we should have it open from now on, because of the aforementioned mold problem. Also, we have a lot of windows, most with no treatments. He thought that 2.5 tons would be about right for us, but we'd need to to with 2 or 3 if we want a 2-stage system, which I think we do. I told him I might ask him to bid a 2 ton/60,000BTU 2-stage system, and he thought that could possibly work for us, especially since we set our AC at about 78. tigerdunes, would you be willing to give me some recommendations now? Thanks so much!...See MoreDeciding between HVAC bids
Comments (9)OK, I heard from the company offering the Trane system. He would insist on a 2 stage thermostat as well. He did say that this is the smallest unit they carry so it is oversized for the size of the house but he thought the first stage would meet be close to our size most of the time and then the higher stage would be available when we were heating both zones (the bonus room and the main house) to meet the larger need. Does that make sense? I'm surprised the choices seem so limited that we'd have to go significantly oversized because while our house is on the smaller side of houses being built new these days, I didn't think it would be so outsized. Is that due to the extra insulation reducing the heating need? I'm just worried about the impact of this on energy efficiency and comfort (we live in a drafty 1100 sq foot apartment right now with a 50 year old GE furnace that is surely way oversized and it gets really cold, heats up fast then gets really cold again during normal winter weather (not extreme cold)). Was hoping to leave such behavior behind! Would it be worth it to put in the XC 95 fully modulating furnace on the idea that it could adjust more smoothly given the system is oversized? It apparently has 60 speeds to choose from......See MoreSingle HVAC zoned or two HVACs without zoned system
Comments (27)The biggest problem with HVAC zone systems is knowing when to choose it as a solution and when not to. Some HVAC companies it's about "sell, sell, sell" whether or not it works... there's more money in "sell, sell, sell" --- when it's only about money? So does the comment above mean I do it for free? No. If you think that you are reading things that aren't there. New construction? best to choose separate systems 9 times out of 10. In order for a zone system to work, you have to know what you are doing. Most HVAC companies staff (the techs they send you) are 20-30 year olds. How much practical experience could they possible have? It's best for HVAC zone systems to be an elegant solution. A HVAC zone system is a tool in the tool bag. Not all homes are suitable for zone systems. Some homes there is no other way, and in some cases complications to those problems will make an HVAC zone system design possibly more prone to problems. You have a problem now, do you want more problems. These decisions among others are decided "in person" --- so considering that becareful what information you decide upon from the internet. Just because it's here doesn't necessarily mean it's true. That said: Depending on equipment level chosen, how many different floors you have in your structure, how much room you have available... will all be factors that make you decide one way or another. From there it's in your best interest to pick a contractor that is skilled: especially when it comes to HVAC zone systems. (there's a lot of garbage out there.)
