Thanks for the feedback. I'm curious why you doubt it's a virus. I'm not eager for my plant to have one, mind you, and it would be great if it were true, but what lead you to that doubt? Note that the leaves are curled upward here, and the entire plant is leggy/tangly. The temps have been uncharacteristically low, and relatively windy for mid-summer preceding and during this condition (around 75 with significant winds for the past two weeks). In fact, the plant was thriving the most during the 90 degree days and I've been hoping for a return to see if that would help. The pot is fairly big. It was recommended by the nursery for tomato plants, probably 15-20 gallons.

It appears as if it may be leaf miners (the larvae of various small flies which burrow in between the leaf layers) at work. Usually the plants will tolerate them with few problems unless the infestation becomes severe. Recommended organic control sprays are Neem, Pyola, Spinosad. Dave

Ben, You are definitely on the right track. Yes it is a Butia and the yellowing is an indicator of a deficiency . The application of a full spectrum palm-specific will make all the difference.. The fertilizer will not fix the color of the existing fronds but will fully solve the yellowing on all new growth. As SecretSquirrel007 pointed out, the you can apply the fertilizer now without any problem. Palm growth is controlled by temperature not food and as such the fertilizer will be access when the warm spring weather arrives. We have been using the Lutz Palm Tree Spikes for over ten years and they are almost magic. Also, once the NUTRIENTproblem had been resolved the palm will likely not need subsequent feeding as palms translocate the nutrients from older fronds to new fronds. Thank you both for the information. They do look close to the Bauhinia galpinii seed pods, but It may be a Bauhinia tomentosa. I have seen a blooms like that on a tree that was on my moms property (where the seed pods came from) that resembled that yellow bloom.....but still not sure. As for the Honey locust,,,,the pods may look close, but the seeds inside are definitely different. I'm just going to plant them in seed starter soil, put them in the greenhouse and just watch to see if they germinate. If so, maybe someone can ID them as a seedling. Thanks again, Jeannie :)
