Finally...a bud has opened. But I'm a wee bit disappointed.

Since SoF has issues with balling from rain (none involved here), I'm thinking our humidity is causing the dirty brown look on the petals. Humidity is currently at 98%!

There are a couple more buds close to opening and rain expected tomorrow and Monday. So, not looking forward to that.

How disappointing! It looked almost perfect in bud, and did seem to be opening ok- have you checked for thrips? they love light coloured roses. Try tapping it into your hand and see if anything falls out.

It gets really humid in spring here too; quite a few roses ball and or brown on the edges, and it can be a bit of a detective mission to find out why.

Sorry about your frustration with SOF first bloom. We generally get a generous amount of rain and is humid here but only ever have a few blooms ball. The also generally do not brown on the edges in wet weather for me. All I can suggest is to give her time, assessing her throughout the seasons and see how she does. She on my top 5 favorite roses - love the cupped, fragrant blooms and she has been very disease resistant here.

Now, I just got an email that Heirloom has this own root rose in stock for Spring shipping. I ordered it, even though I have a grafted one coming from DA already. I'm considering it a scientific comparison primarily. It's not like I have a problem.

Ohhh I am so sorry I did not realized my comment never showed up at all before. I am so glad to get all this positive feedback regarding growing spirit of freedom as a bush. My original plan was to have it on a pergola like these magnificent pictures from Helen, but my pergola plans have been postponed. I have 4 SoF in pots and I am a terrible pot mom so I want to get them in the ground somehow. I have plans for 2 on a shed and one on a fence but that leaves me with one extra plant and no space for a climber that I could think of. I may just give her a try as a large bush somewhere. Helen mine are also grafted on Dr. H and I would die if they turn up looking as awesome as yours. I am hopping one day to have a beautiful pergola also.

Thanks! I tried Spirit of Freedom and it didn't care for where I had it (Dr. Huey grafted from David Austin Roses USA) so I removed it. I'm going to try again. Own root this time. I also suspect the good doctor doesn't seem to like my particular location due to his lack of root development, but does great within six miles. I also added St. Alban because I love those fluffy, soft yellow, Tea-Noisette-looking blooms and Comte de Chambord. CdC is one I've long considered, but never tried. I will now! Steven

Spirit of Freedom has not been great in my garden but I think the plant has just been stressed due to location. It has slowly become a fairly good sized plant. I think the blooms will be better maybe next year. It is pretty healthy. The patent is going to expire on it pretty soon. Oh, I just checked...patent was applied for in 2003 so it is already expired as of July this year. So if you have a friend with a plant, you could take cuttings . Frances in NJ I have bought some roses grafted on Fortuniana from K&M. They do well here in zone 7a, NC and have withstood temps down to 4 degrees and some prolonged freezes. Here's my Lavaglut on Fort. from K&M. It's pretty old now. I do have some suckers showing up from Fortuniana.

I know how you feel. Quite a few of my roses balled last year especially scentimental and moonstone buds got heat fried that I still have not seen an actual moonstone flower in person.
