I have driven past a 1900 oak table upside down in some one's drive before now, and knocked on the door to ask if it was going for firewood, and could I have it?The young couple hated it, so it's in France in pride of place in my kitchen now, perfect, thee penny bit corners, and reeded pillars with cup and cover legs, so much better than modern gear, it's true, it's a love affair, of sorts, and a very good friend and dealer agrees, and told me once, when people come to visit they may see modern style furniture and they can say how much you paid and when, but with vintage or more precious antiques, they just can't do the math, so you win,,,!

Thanks for saying it so well, Mike! We started our antiques business 11 years ago, importing "fine antiques for regular folks" from Europe, and we are still as in love with the business and with every piece that we choose to bring to the USA! You said a lot of the things that I always say...especially about buying what you love. It was great to read!

A great post and enjoyable read! I couldn’t agree more; the heart wants what the heart wants. That’s the beauty of unique antique pieces- they really speak to you. While perusing an antique shop, one person’s ideal find could be completely different to what someone else desires, it’s just such a personal thing. As long as a beautiful piece fits the rest of the criteria you’ve outlined, let your heart do the deciding! Being in the Antiques industry/ working in an antique shop means I see this theory in action every day. There is nothing better than uniting a customer with a piece which is just perfect for them (you often see them instantly fall in love). Then the next customer arrives, and they’ll be emotionally drawn to something completely different! It’s a great industry to be a part of! Thanks for the post.
