Does anyone grow Spirit of Freedom in cold zones?
Comments (14)Hi Kitty We do have humidity in the summer, but I find that roses only ball in the rainy spring weather around here, so it's not the kind of humidity they get in the Deep South or Pacific Northwest where you'd have to worry about the number of petals. You're prairie land in MN too, so the Austins should open for you most of the summer unless it's unusually wet with rain. As for color, The Alnwick Rose and SOF are both a "medium pink" in my eyes. Alnwick might be just a touch darker with SOF on the blush side, but they're pretty similar to me. Both are pretty upright for me, but Alnwick bushes out a little more and reblooms a little better for me. Neither one is a "wow" rebloomer for me, though. Among the Austins, I'd say Heritage and William Shakespeare 2000 rebloom the best around here, but most of the rest that I have (like these two) rebloom every 6 weeks or so like the average rose in my yard. Hope that helps - I think either would work for you in your zone. Cynthia...See MoreSpirit of Freedom
Comments (6)According to Helpmefind.com, Sririt of Freedom has occasional repeat later in the season. When I see this about a rose I just take for granted repeat bloom is hard to come by. In my U.S. zone 5 where we have a cold winter, the roses go naturally dormant. Spring, after pruning back winter dieback, begins a new growth cycle. Our first bloom usually is the biggest of the season. In Thailand, I presume your climate is such you have no natural dormant period and the roses grow year round. If that's the case once it blooms, with occasional repeat later in the season and with such a long season you'll wait forever for repeat blooms. You may need to do like they do in Florida and California where there is usually no dormant period and cut them back to force new growth. It blooms on new wood so doing that may fool it into thinking it's come out of dormancy. You'll have to contact someone in those areas to see when they cut back....See MoreSpirit of Freedom and The Wedgewood Rose
Comments (38)Dave, thanks for the great review on TGG. I was wondering how light of pink it would get. I have seen flowers on the web ranging from medium pink, light pink, to white lol. It probably will be lighter in warmer weather here like the rest of my Austins. I will probably get it in the fall or next spring. I will have to think of where I can put it. It sounds pretty and I love the flower form. I like that it starts out cupped and melds into a waterlily shape. It might look good with my The Ingenious Mr Fairchild with its peony shaped flowers. It is trying to be a climber here..slowly but steadily (own root). Helen your photos of Wedgewood are delightful! I can't wait to get mine. I have heard the shipping has started for my zone (9). Super excited! I think Wedgewood and SoF are going in large pots to start out. If they get too crazy I might put them in the ground later. I need to figure out a strong trellis and where it will go. I can only hope my Strawberry Hill will be as beautiful as your photos. It has only had a few tiny blooms thus far. It has skinny canes but is trying to climb. Its still an own root baby and I am impatient lol. At least she's healthy. ~Sjn...See MoreSpirit of Freedom
Comments (19)In the US Heirloom Roses still has SoF listed own root but its sold out right now. You can sign up to be emailed when in stock. There may be other places that still carry it. I no longer see it on the DA website which is a crying shame since its so pretty and kind of unique. It starts out light pink then ages to a lilac pink. Smell this morning is divine. I cant think of a good reason for it to discontinued. It does get big and the flowers get big and heavy since it has such a high petal count (around 200) that sometimes the blooms can nod a little, which I actually like with tall roses. They look down on you so youcan see them. I dont have a ton of stuff blooming right now, being January etc. but today she has an open flower and a few buds. Side view of blossom and bud. The buds are so tiny that its a miracle that they can unfurl to such a big bloom with so many petals in it lol. Another side view...see how dark the reverse of the bottom petals are ! The bud is much darker than the inside of the flower..kinda pretty!...See MoreVaporvac Z6-OhioRiverValley
