I'm from the Pacific Northwest too, and I've found that some varieties that promise the world but don't produce in our area (or have many problems). I've tried many of the varieties mentioned, and I'll list the ones that I've seen do well for the Northwest EVERY TIME. 1. Easy Going - Yellow - I can't believe I haven't seen this mentioned before! It transformed me from a so-so yellow rose lover to adoring, singing it's praises, rose lover. The fragrance is stop in your tracks worthy. And production...unbelievable, at least for our area! I actually had my husband cut off 1/3 of the bush (the bush had become HUGH), and gave that third to my neighbor. Now, 6 months later, I can't even tell it's been divided. My bush at this time has about 80 or so fuss-free blooms. My neighbor's has about 30 roses (she doesn't dead head, and generally ignores it). I see it constantly winning at rose shows, where it's identity is unknown till I check the hidden tag. The only caveat is that with thorns easy going it's not. But being in the Northwest, that might be of benefit, as the deer might stay away. It's reason I invested in a Waterford vase, roses like that deserve the best. Double Delight - Bi-colored red and white - I'll add my vote for this rose of beauty and aroma. Sheila's Perfume - Bi-colored red and yellow - Another beautiful, yet fragrant example. It's not as prolific as Easy Going, but maybe I expect too much? Ebb Tide - Purple - The most vibrant purple, I've seen. Fragrant, but short duration of bloom. I special ordered this, only to have it languish in the post office when I was called out of town when a family member was ill. By all rights it should have been dead, but it revived and is alive and well, it's that hardy. I have, or have had most of the others mentioned, Zephadrin Dauphin (pretty sure I spelled that wrong, sorry) I'd only recommend if you have a spot with a shade, and hate thorns. Angel Face, I found to be super color lavendar, and fragrant, but not too hardy. I'll add Lady Banks, as a scentimental favorite: I don't own it but my mother-in-law, who passed, did (a remarkable lady of great taste). The world's largest rose bush in Tombstone, AZ, is a Lady Banks. If you visit the bush in Tombstone, you'll be amazed, and the rose in your garden will bring back happy memories (I believe you can buy one right there, and have it mailed to your home). I wish I'd had one sent. My best advice for the Pacific Northwest rose lovers is to visit Portland's International Rose Test Garden during it's peak during July or August, if you can. It's truly a delight, but the garden will show you both new varieties and old favorities. You can see what exactly what you'd want in your garden and what will do well. Happy gardening!

the DA literature says it grows to 3-4 feet - don't believe it. In my climate it makes a very nice 8 foot climber I believe I've seen Graham Thomas make a very small 5-6 feet climber even up here north of Boston (& then die back to almost nothing during a particularly harsh winter). milieu serene, are you familiar with the Climbing Tea (vs. "Hybrid Tea") & Noisette roses? They are older roses that often, but not always, have a more relaxed flower form, yet they also often have the advantage of being bred from wild roses that naturally grow in a climate not unlike yours. In fact, the first Noisette rose came from a South Carolina plantation, back in the early 19th Century (or late 18th). They are all dependable rebloomers, even in hot summers, and it's not unusual for them to suffer little from diseases when grown in warm/hot, humid climates (the advantage of being bred from wild roses of the semi-tropics). If you aren't familiar with them, I encourage you to also take this question of yours over to the Antique Rose Forum. There you're bound to get good answers from other rosarians in the Southeast who can give you good recommendations about yellow Tea & Noisette roses that will handle your climate well. (Oh, and yes, a good number of the Noisette & Tea roses are varying shades of yellow, or yellow with pink &/or orange.)

Below is the info. that Floweraremusic (zone 5) in Washington gave on her 2020 winter-survival. She has alkaline clay with rocks at bottom like mine & less snow in winter: "My hardiest roses are the Canadians. John Davis, John Cabot, Wm. Baffin, Morden Sunrise, Morden Blush and Morden Centennial, Victorian Memory aka Isabelle Skinner, also a Canadian rose. All these only have tiny bit of tip damage and bloom a lot with no special care. Also, my Hybrid Perpetuals only have tip damage after winter. Magna Charta, Mrs. John Laing, Black Prince and Marchesa Buccella. The only negative is they don’t have long enough cutting stems. All my Austins are very hardy. The one I just can not grow is Jude. Leonardo da Vinci is super hardy and always healthy. Quietness comes through winter very well. Even Rouge Royale survives beautifully. Cinderella Fairy Tale is very hardy. Gruss an Aachen also. Ballerina and Marjorie Fair are both hardy. Poseidon, Princess Charlene de Monaco and Crazy Love didn’t do as well as I’d hoped. The surprise losses this year are Quicksilver, and Dames de Chenonceau who is left with only 1 cane. Versigny is also reduced down to almost nothing. This was a mild winter with very little snow. " Floweraremusic (zone 5). From StrawChicago (zone 5a with hard black-gumbo alkaline clay & less snow but with freezing rain in winter). Versigny didn't survive winter either. So I lost Versigny TWICE. Besides Versigny, other wimpy own-root roses that don't survive winter well: Paul Neyron, Anna's Promise, Pink Peace (own-root died 1st winter, but grafted-Pink Peace survives many winter), Elantyne, Jude the Obscure, Young Lycidas (bought as grafted-on-Dr.Huey, now with only one cane), Mary Daly, and many floribundas don't survive my zone 5a: Pink Chiffon, Sheila's perfume, King Arthur, Deep Purple, Shocking blue, Honey Bouquet (survived 1 winter). Polka Climber (survived 1 winter), Cloutilde Soupert (died twice on me). Sutter's Gold didn't survive winter, same with many fragrant mini-roses from Burlington nursery. Below are my hardy OWN-ROOT roses in my zone 5a alkaline clay, only Double Delight, Young Lycidas and Lavender Crush are grafted-on-Dr.Huey. Carol: The peachy rose in my bouquet is Summer Samba floribunda (fruity scent). Stehapnie: My own-root Golden Celebration smells like cupcakes from the oven, it makes my house smells like a cross between a florist shop and a bakery (YUM). One bloom perfumes the entire kitchen. Crimson glory (hybrid tea) smells good on the bush, but the scent is gone after 1 day in the vase. I prefer Firefighter's scent that lasts until petals drop. For quality of scent, I place Gruss an Teplitz's spicy scent over Firefighter. Gruss is drought tolerant & likes heat. It blooms best when the weather is over 90 F. Gruss grows wild in Pakistan's hot & dry and alkaline sandy soil (learned that from Khalid, who used to post in Organic rose forum).
