Kitchen Remodel Finally Complete....Before and After
Comments (55)Quick update... I ended up ordering a spoon and fork from Target.com. Here's a pic of it installed on the back wall. Also finished up installing my DIY under cabinet lighting... these lights are bright!!!! So glad I used a dimmer switch...this is the dimming level I tend to keep it at. Also forgot to mention that one of the pantries is a broom closet. After living in my new kitchen for almost of month now, I feel like I got everything right and did the best I could with the space I have. Trash cabinet, baking tray cabinet, broom closet, sink drop down tray, spice rack, plus all of the additional cabinet space makes me one happy camper. :) My only regret is not putting in pull outs for my pots/pans and lids. It's a bit of a pain having to bend down and look back into the cabinet to find what I'm looking for. Maybe at a later time... since it's still possible. Another thing I'm finding an issue with is our fridge. We bought a counter depth so we could have additional room, but it's been tough living with the limited space. Luckily, we still have our old fridge, so we're thinking of keeping it now to store larger items....See MoreI've come full circle for paint - should have trusted my gut!
Comments (11)Mairin: Your kitchen is amazing! Have you posted any photos of your completed backsplash yet? Thank you so much for posting such good expansive shots of your RP walls. It looks a lot more tan on my screen, but I can tell that it is going to work great for me as my cabinets are almost as dark as yours and my granite is light (Blanco Romano). Based on the 14 x 8 panel I painted I tend to wonder if need to go a bit deeper in tone. I understand that most paint can be lightened as I've seen reference to 50% strength, but can the same thing be done to darken the paint? I was thinking perhaps just a 10% or 20% deepening. On the other hand once I get the full walls painted it may be just fine. I'll check out the decorator's white. Cloud White was also mentioned earlier but tends to be too yellow next to my horrible white/gray window frames that can't be changed out at this time, but BM lacey pearl might work well. raehelen: Cabot Trail reminds me of melted milk chocolate. The Edgecomb Gray which is next to the Revere Pewter on the swatch card has a bit more tan to it, but is still quite gray. It is lovely too, but I needed the cooler tone of the RP. In my spavce both tend to have a green cast in certain lights....See MoreA full-gut remod...refinement.
Comments (11)Well on the street where I grew up, and probably most others there, there are very few reasons that would cause people to move In the post-college years, here are reasons why people move: 1) Marriage 2) Death 3) Death of spouse 4) Physical incapacity 5) Florida My neighbor there, Sissy, lived in her house for 89 years, and moved reluctantly only after she was caught lying about falling, how often it was happening, and "It happened right before you came over" -- it had obviously happened many hours before. And this is why my father is leaving. He started falling a number of years ago, would not admit it, or admit how long it takes him to get up but now he can't deny it. But he "never understood moving from house to house" which I think includes this time. Very many of these neighbors lived in time capsules, too, which is probably why I like those....See MoreFull kitchen remodel - total choice paralysis :)
Comments (22)@somedude - I like a range of burner output. There is no question that an open burner with star configuration will give even heat. The issue is with control of the lowest output burner -- complaints have come up repeatedly on this for BS and Culinarian. Not to say there aren't exceptions or work-arounds. With due respect to M, I don't want to adjust a burner grate to simmer. I absolutely require a 100% dependable simmer burner which I use every day for something as simple as sweating a soup base, or making a quick sauce for fish, simmering tomato sauce or beans, cooking oatmeal or cream of what without lumps etc. Also, say I'm reheating 2 portions of soup or a serving of beans. I use a 1 quart saucepan for that and I don't want that tippy or tricky on a monster burner. With little ones that can become an issue since reheating food happens in small quantities for their meals. This is top of the market stuff. Things should work as promised. Service should be excellent if needed. You had mentioned a griddle. With that, there are only 4 burners. So high power burner front left; simmer burner front right. I don't think a 22K burner is useful in back. I would want 15s there. Here's why: whatever you're cooking, high power and low power cooking requires more attention. Once that's done, the pot/pan can usually move. With 6 burners, then the high outputs would be on either side and simmer in the center with medium output in the back. I would never need more than a single 22K burner because I rarely saute and never deep fry. I'd use it for boiling water for pasta, for searing, and for cooking large pots. Usually I grill inside or out and oven roast. Even heat is very important. But I can tell you from learning to cook when no residential stoves had high output burners, good cookware can make a huge difference. A single French copper saute pan or a Deyemere saute will make any high heat cooking task easier and smoother. Also how much anyone is cooking at a time makes a difference. I certainly understand have a larger number of higher output burners if someone is cooking for six or eight people or more all the time because quantities are large. Then you give up some of the control for the output. Seems like the pivot is: how important -- given your needs now and going forward -- is another 7K on any single burner vs better control and excellent service should it be required down the line? Re Hollandaise and melting chocolate. The first can be done in the food processor without any cooking on the stove. The second is easiest in the microwave. Anyone using a top for those is working too hard with too much clean up. I view those as marketing ploys....See More- 7 years ago
