Shower Enclosure Advice, Please
Comments (3)We specified starphire glass for our guest bathroom shower--I don't know if there are different versions of it or only one type. We used 3/8" glass. This is a guest bathroom, so the shower doesn't see much use. DH and I did use that bathroom exclusively for a period of about 3-6 months while our other two bathrooms were undergoing simultaneous demolition and construction/renovation. Neither of us felt that the shower enclosure and door were flimsy in the least. We were and are very happy with it. We had Clear Shield applied to cut down on etching/clouding, as we have moderately hard water. Even though the shower is rarely used, that might not always be the case, and an ounce of prevention..... The glass company we used uses Clear Shield, others use Showerguard, two completely different companies, and systems. Showerguard is factory applied, impregnated in the glass I believe. Clear Shield is a coating applied by the fabricator. We chose the finish on the clamps, and upgraded somewhat on the handle. The only other thing we specified was the height of the glass. The gentleman who came out to take the measurements and write up our order, pointed out that the "standard" height would put the clamps right on our listello border tile. Totally fine structurally, but he wanted us to be aware of that. We opted to go with the taller height to avoid that (DH was happier with the taller glass because in his mind it would minimize the likelihood of splashing or over-spray over the top of the glass)....See MoreHow much do frameless glass shower doors cost?
Comments (90)Ours was 3K, included all parts, glass, labor. The shower is a modified square shape a square with a slice off of one of the corners. Of course, that's where the door is. He really struggled with getting it all to line up. Mostly because the standard door wasn't the same size as the opening for it and there is an additional trim piece of glass beside the door. Looks great in the end, fainted at the price. Good to see that others are familiar with these kind of numbers. He did everything, measure, fabricate, deliver, install. They were very tall pieces of 3/8" tempered glass. It was no picnic for him!...See MoreGlass enclosures
Comments (5)We have a glass shower door in our guest bathroom only, so it doesn't see long-term, day-in/day-out use (DH and I used that bathroom exclusively for a few months when our other two bathrooms were being reno'd, and my parents use it during their week-long visits a once or twice a year). That said, we still wanted to take some precautions so the door/panels would remain clean and clear over time. We used Starphire glass (clear, or low-iron glass--no greenish tint), so our white shower wall tile still appears white when viewed through the glass. We had Clear Shield applied (the glass supplier uses that, others offer ShowerGuard, which is factory applied during the glass manufacturing process). When my parents (or others) are here, we keep a bottle of shower spray and a squeegee in the stall. Hopefully they spritz and squeegee the glass (and walls) after showering! LOL We don't have a hand-held shower head. When I clean the shower walls and glass, I use 7th Generation Disinfecting Bathroom Cleaner, a no-rinse spray cleaner. I spray it on, let it sit for about 10 min, and then spray a little more on the walls or on a microfiber cloth (just to re-wet the surface), and wipe. On the glass, I'll follow up with a little glass cleaner (Perfect Glass from BB&B--no ammonia, and streak/smear-free), inside and out, and wipe with paper towel. Ours still looks terrific. I think it would still look pretty good if it got daily use, given our post-shower spray/wipe down or squeegee routine (we wipe down our tub walls after showering every day, and the grout and tile still look brand new). Luckily DH wasn't too difficult to convince that an ounce of prevention....well, makes for a cleaner tub/shower surround in the long-run!!!...See MoreShower Enclosure & Glass Sealer
Comments (5)Our contractor said he recommends Rain-X, the same stuff you use on your car windshield. He says it lasts for quite a while and can be reapplied. Also said you can buy an awful lot of Rain-X for the price of ShowerGuard. Has anyone ever tried that? I have UV coating on my big windows in the rest of the house, and I find they get dog snarf and other things on them that don't want to come off. I'm concerned I'd have a similar problem and no way to clean the shower with a glass guard product on it over time....See Morenosoccermom
