I am sorry, I don't understand what you mean by a "cover for the hood". Why can't the hood look like the hood in your photo? That is what island hoods look like.

Do you have a photo of a cover for a hood you may have seen online that you like? That would help to understand the look you are aiming for.

That picture is of a custom cabinetry hood. As you've already mentioned, it will be expensive. Furthermore, it is massive, not only in actual dimensions, but in the weightiness of its appearance. I am sorry, but I don't even think it looks good in the photo you attached. Can you tell us how big is your kitchen? What budget do you have for the kitchen update overall? Are you redoing your cabinets, so that you want the hood to match?

Will do! The island will probably be 144 inches long and 3ft wide. The current island in our unit and the one pictured is 96 inches. Do you think I could do recessed lighting over the counter and a small chandelier over the dining area?

What will the decor of your kitchen be? Traditional? Contemporary? I am asking because I noticed that your pic of the kitchen with the enclosed hood is what I would call a country kitchen look - farmhouse sink, bridge faucet, wood window shutters, cottagey-blue cabinet color, the chairs and other furnishings. That wood hood is part of that theme. Is that the decor you are seeking for your co-op apartment? Will the chandelier you are planning also be in that style?

A stainless steel hood--perhaps in a more attractive shape than what is shown in your OP--is more versatile style-wise, and will be less expensive, and just easier to do.

Thanks! My decor is more contemporary. I am going to talk to our contractor about the hood. The stainless steel hood without a covering is growing on me.

Is the reason you can't move the stove because it is on a gas line? If that is the case, I would cap the gas line and look into an induction range/cooktop on the perimeter. Having an island hood can detract from the sense of openness and sight lines.

Rantontoo - I would have thought the OP can't move the range from the island because the ductwork for the hood exhaust is over the island. The co-op won't allow the hood to be moved because the ductwork cannot be moved likely because it goes through the entire building. Perhaps the OP can confirm or not.

It is an electric stove and currently the kitchen is closed in and the microwave with a hood is mounted right above the stove. So we are starting from scratch with the hood. There is no duct work. We also debated not putting a hood at all but it seems like its best we add a hood.

I'm puzzled about not allowing you to move the stove. If there is no existing ductwork that cannot be moved and no gas lines to deal with, why does the condo board say you cannot move the stove?
