Do you have a favorite card or board game
Comments (7)Oh, this is easy. We love this obscure game so much, I am really happy to spread the word. It's called MooT, and it has the subtitle, "a game of language and politics." It is sort of a language trivia game. Some make you work with word origins, and some with usage, that make you think, "Wow, I THOUGHT I knew what that word means, but what does it mean EXACTLY?" and it is really funny, too. It's not advertised, just known by word of mouth (the guy makes them in his home). We stumbled on it in a museum shop in Canada when we were about to meet some friends for a vacation back when all our kidz were little. The box was interesting, with sample questions like, "Is the pope a primate?", "Is this a rhetorical question?" and "Is the invisible Barbie doll beyond your Ken?" We bought it, figuring it might be fun for the 4 adults one evening after the kidz went to sleep. "An" evening. Ha! We played that game every night, until all hours. Over the years, we carefully rationed out the questions so we wouldn't use them up too soon (Fortunately, there will be a new version soon). My brother and cousin got hooked, and so on. For my 40th birthday (several years ago!), my husband and the other couple planned a "MooT" hunt party -- it was a scavenger hunt, but to figure out what each item they had to get was, the teams had to solve a MooT question, and then go find the artifact or perform the action (taking a picture to prove it) indicated. So you see, we REALLY love this game. You can buy it on line (I've never seen it in a store again; maybe it's only in Canada). I have put the link below. Plus, the genius who came up with it has a list serve where you can get a MooT question of the month. If you love words, this is for YOU. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Here is a link that might be useful: the MooT site...See MoreWhat Are Your Favorite Card & Board Games? Any Recommendations?
Comments (53)This post is bringing up many wonderful memories. When I was a kid, our family played Yahtzee just about every night when we were on summer vacation (it was one of the few things that brought us together.) My sister and I would quietly stay up well after bedtime to have "Spit"(the card game) tournaments (it was also a great procrastination tool to keep us from homework--which also worked in college.) Our family also played Hearts, Spades, Sorry, Big Boggle (I can no longer find this version of Boggle) and Risk (there were always a lot of hurt feelings with this game.) When I was 16 I went on a bike trip across Maine with two older sisters--we brought a word dice game called Perquacky and played it in the camping area rest rooms (where there was light) at night (I think we only played if there was some sort of vanity shelf or large sink area. I hope we didn't sit on the floor.) Many of us got together this summer for vacation and we had fun with Texas Hold 'Em. My parents and a couple of my sisters really enjoy(ed) bridge. The games I've enjoyed playing with my kids are Scrabble, Cribbage (a favorite for my daughter and I when we are on vacation--we keep score with pencil and paper rather than a board), Sequence, Canasta, Chutes and Ladders, Life, Careers, Battle Ship, Rack-O and some lesser known games. Several of these come in small boxes and use special cards: Quiddler, Rat-a-tat-cat, Frog Juice, and for small kids Panda-momium and Hiss. We were/are particularly fond of Rat-a-tat cat and Frog Juice. Blink is also supposed to be very good. A game my teenage daughter and I got hooked on for a while is Fluxx--which is a card game with a special pack of cards. The rules of the game continually change depending on the card you play. It is great fun. We wore through a couple of decks. Mary 228: Harry's Hat game sounds like it would be lots of fun. Thanks for the chance to reminisce....See Morewhat's your favorite board game?
Comments (30)Check out geekandsundry.com under Tabletop games - lots and lots of board games! My faves to play with the grandkids were Qwirkle, Tsuro, & Ticket to Ride. Settlers of Cataan was also fun, but more mature than my 10-y-o grandchild, but mostly because he doesn't read English well. (He's Japanese.) If your son likes strategic games, there are many more out there - you just need to look!...See MoreNeed some card games for ages 10-12.
Comments (10)If you're talking about regular playing cards, at that age we were all wild for Crazy Eights, and did a variation of Crazy Ones (aces wild, start with one card in your hand), Twos, etc., working our way up to eights. We started with eight cards each, though the rules in the link say five. Which you use depends on how many players you have (eight is better with two players, but five is probably better with four) and how long you want the game to last. We never counted points. Just shuffled and dealt again. Most of the kids I know have never heard of it, so it might be a good one for something old that's "new". Gin Rummy and Cribbage (you can draw or print out a board and use buttons or Monopoly men if you don't have a board) are also a lot of fun at that age. There was an open ended Rummy game that was big at camp, because it was quicker and easier than Gin, but it doesn't require as much high level thinking because you don't have to manage exactly ten cards....See MoreHareball
