You could do classics like "Uno" and "Spot It" which both you can find on Amazon easily.

"Word Around" is a circle card game, like Spot it. You can also find it on Amazon. I've played these games with kids between 9-13.

McT, It is a great game. Basically, the board has the cards listed and on your turn you place a chip on the board representing the card you played. You try and get a sequence of 5 chips in a row (sequence) and you need two sequences to win. It is played with a double deck of cards and each card is on the board twice, except for the jacks, they are wild (two-eyed jack can place a chip anywhere on the board; one-eyed jack can remove an opponents chip). There are some more rules but that is the gist of it. It is real easy to learn the game. Ages eight and up can easily play. Strategy is used but luck may be more important. I like it best with two teams of two or three players per team. Eight players can be too slow for my taste. Happy Sunday !!! Pseudacris....Hope you are on ur feelng better soon ! I had mine out 4 weeks after my son was born. Was having attacks during my pregnancy and they kept tellin me it was false labor. Hope you are doing well ! Velsgarden, I am so thankful your sister is ok !! Cars can be replaced...sounds like she is lucky she wasnt hurt !! Dorisl is determined to mail..we kidnapped u Doris, ur suppose to just ENJOY this season !! Agnela...too funny ! It happens to me too, if I go out, it is only bills..lol My father trades baseball cards, and we always "race" to the mailbox... Keiki, and all others....PLEASE dont get discouraged...I have asked many elves to slowly mail their cards..to allow the "RECEIVING" to last until Christmas !!!!! I still need reports from a few people...would you kindly email me...so that I can finish up on those that need some cards. To those that offered to help me with a second round of cards, THANKS, the list has been going around..I update it and then send to the next person. Thanks for all the Bingo Cards, words will be posted today...feel free to post that you got words...just not which ones :D Had about 2 inches of snow last night..sure made it feel more like Christmas... I love games....I picked up a game once on clearance at Marshalls. It was called Times To Remember. It's a trivia game with questions ranging from the 1950s to mid-90s. I thought it was very clever and have never seen another trivia game quite like it. (my description below) So if you're over 40, you'll love this game. You can play with two people or two teams. I forget the actual rules...but we play like this: You both have a big round disc with years marked. Then you have these big paperclips with 'year spans'. Questions are asked to BOTH teams at the same time and you must guess the year (with year span clips 1 thru 7). Be sure to whisper and point...you don't want your opponents to hear you. If you know a question 100%, then use your ONE YEAR clip. If you have no clue, use your 7 YEAR CLIP. First team to get rid of all their clips wins. It's currently on Ebay...if you're a game queen like me....get it. Just about everyone that plays it, thinks it's fun. Younger people tend to have a tougher time with it. But what makes it fun...is you don't have to be a genius! You might just 'kinda know' or have an 'inkling' or you remember what grade you were in when it happened....so it's a lot of fun. The questions range from super easy...to 'how in the heck would I know'!

Cricket is all short story writing pieces, (fiction and non-fiction) and not particularly compelling, IMHO. (As a teacher I subscribed for a year but since it was "meh" I quit.) Cobblestone was more interesting to me, but I don't think for my granddaughter. My grandson loves history, but he's getting something else . . . ) I loved a lot of the books on the "Mighty Girl" list, but they were so specific, like "How to Deal With Teen Anxiety." Great topic but who wants to get that for Christmas! I really liked the "American Girl" series, but again, so specific. I wish there was a compendium of "best of" for that. I liked the Teen survival guide, but it is really text-dense, like a visit with a therapist. I'd rather get a book that covers other topics too, not just emotions and drama. Some of the reviews mentioned how intense it was. Not that it wouldn't be wonderful help for my granddaughter, but just not Christmas present material, IMHO. Maybe I should just pick three of these small American Girl Guides. I would love it. My granddaughter, not so much. She's not into politics and world affairs. She has enough drama just in her personal life to deal with . . . she needs escapism and relaxation. I like the idea behind the title, not sure if the essays are appealing or not to a teen. Edited to add what do y'all think of this? I wonder if it could be colored in too . . . Also an extremely fun game is "I Doubt It." You use a standard deck of 52 cards.

how funny, party! I was just about to mention "Mille Bornes"! Great game, available on eBay for decent prices (saw it on Amazon for $29 and one eBay listing for $90+ -- but with free shipping. LOL. )

If you're talking about regular playing cards, at that age we were all wild for Crazy Eights, and did a variation of Crazy Ones (aces wild, start with one card in your hand), Twos, etc., working our way up to eights. We started with eight cards each, though the rules in the link say five. Which you use depends on how many players you have (eight is better with two players, but five is probably better with four) and how long you want the game to last. We never counted points. Just shuffled and dealt again. Most of the kids I know have never heard of it, so it might be a good one for something old that's "new".

Gin Rummy and Cribbage (you can draw or print out a board and use buttons or Monopoly men if you don't have a board) are also a lot of fun at that age. There was an open ended Rummy game that was big at camp, because it was quicker and easier than Gin, but it doesn't require as much high level thinking because you don't have to manage exactly ten cards.

We enjoyed playing Cribbage with our father when we were that age, and we learned how to add playing it. I also like what we called Dirty 8 with a regular deck of cards, though some people call it Crazy 8, but this is not the game Pillog describes. More like Uno. Hearts was another game we enjoyed, and as kids we played for hours on our vacations to a cabin on a Wisconsin lake.
