That's a bit less than $100/sf, if you take out $450 for undermount sink cutouts (I am assuming 3@ $150 each) that's about $70/sf. I don't know how that is for price but you might want to check remnants out. Is it 1 1/4" thick or 3/4" thick? I am paying $65/sf for jet mist granite, 1 1/4" thick, templated, fabricated and installed plus $150 each for undermount sink cutouts and it was one of the more expensive remnants in the yard. My guy had tons of 3/4" marble for much cheaper. So yes, I think you can do better, but I don't know the pricing in your area. I'd shop around and look for remnants.

Lol. This post is from 2006 and I'm still getting notifications of replies to it. We replaced our counter tops with the inexpensive Formica at Lowe's about 5 years ago now. We had a water leak at the kitchen sink which caused some damage that we wanted to fix so while we were ripping things out we decided to replace the counter tops. We did end up having to build a new face for the base of the counters as the thin paneling stuff was not the best, so my cupboards on the bottom are stronger than ever. My husbad also had to cut the piece off the back of the countertops to make them fit as mine weren't as deep as the ones from the store but with a little trim along the back of the counter and nobody knows. I love my kitchen even to this day. The money was well worth it! If I remember correctly they cost about $150? In Sept we will have lived here for 12 years!!

Suggestions please looked at granite.... nice but so thick and heavy.... Now would go for it if wasnt so thick... which I dont need or want ... esp in this old money pit house... that" eco type from paper" supposely 'out of site or sight ? " priced... laminates blah..... really just need the peninsula part.. that part of kitchen is new... also. if we could find a piece of matching beige laminate that would do the other mitre ...... the main part of cabinets are 2 mitres.. you knw.... almost u shaped.... where i want to do away with reg stove and do a cooktop... Hubby suggested wood custom made ... I prob like stinless but bet it is very expensive... saw several countertop on Craigs list but not quite the right lengths etc.... watched You tube for "Lazy Granite" but it has so many seams 160<---------------------------------------------> 8 ^ SINK ^ 2 ' 3 ' 6 ' ! best I can do without drawing program but it is 160 long countertop now with both right and left mitres in laminate left L is 82 long 36 " right L long Thanks all

If you're willing to glue it up, there's lumber out there--just not in Home Depot, usually, or your average "lumberyard"--those are usually selling to the building industry, and they don't want/need thick hardwoods. OK, I'm presuming you don't want to glue 2x4's together for this project...Frankly, the easiest thing to do is order a piece from one of the sites people've already given you. You don't have woodworking tools, right? To get a nice flat top, you're talking more than just sanding, you need to get 'em to be flat on the edges so's there's no gaps between the boards. Not that easy with just a sander, though you're not talking about that long a piece. Try looking for places that sell hardwood in your area--that'd be a better google term than lumberyard. Rocker sells some wood, but $$ (on the other hand, maybe you can get there by car?). I tend to buy nice wood at West Penn Hardwoods--have always liked what they send me. Anyhow, Home Depot etc tend to only have 1" (aka 3/4" in real life) thick hardwoods, when they have those. Suppose you could buy, say, 2" x 1" maple strips and glue together on end, but I wouldn't, that's just too much gluing! The Amazon piece--you do know maple's not the greatest for staining, right?
