Take pictures of what you like to the cabinet maker.

What you might be looking for is the same as what I eventually decided I wanted.. a simple reverse raised panel with a more detailed framing bead. Shocking to me it was one of the cheapest door styles. It's also not mitered which is helpful for painted finishes in particular.

All your examples are inset cabinetry. That is a big part of the look. Pic 1 and 3 have an applied molding around the frame, with the molding rising above the face of the door. Pic 2 is a simple raised panel. Pic 3 is definitely beaded inset; 1 and 2 may be also but the pictures aren't close enough to tell. Pic 1 has something different about those island drawers; I can't see well enough nor do I know enough to tell you what it is.

Here is an applied molding door similar to those shown above. The molding can be simple like this or very ornate. The right side of this pic shows the door in a beaded inset frame. The door shown is recessed panel, they could be made with a raised panel also.

I liked the applied molding too but was significantly more expensive.

Depending on the cabinet maker, you may be able to have a basic Shaker door but dressed up--change the angle of the interior bevel, add detailing to the outer edge, etc. I'm with you. A true Shaker is kind of boring but it's hard to find anything else that isn't considered dated.

nancyjwb, that is such helpful information! I had no idea that was what I was gravitating to until you pointed it out. I always thought I didn't like the inset look with the hinges showing. Is there a way to do something similar without all the excess hardware showing?

I am a bit worried my tastes are going to rack up the $$$ with inset and applied molding, lol. Plus with 3 young kids I worry they may not be super easy on inset cabinets- I'm sure there is not a lot of room for "oopses" with kids being less than gentle on the door. :(

I was almost afraid to ask here. I really have no clue about this stuff. I feel a little smarter on the subject already haha! What a great community here! :)

Also, hubby and I have differing opinion on paneled refrigerator or not. The dishwasher and range hood will match the cabinetry. The fridge will be two 30" Thermador columns, side by side. Thoughts on this while I have you here?

They are different looks for sure but for me paneled is easy call. The Thermador is particularly nice paneled with the hidden compressor and fully flush hinges. SS is tougher to keep clean looking too.

My kitchen is in progress so I don't have finished cabinets yet to show. Took me a while to figure out what I wanted...

If you simplify the door Dr8477 posted with a flat panel you can see options using mitered rails and stiles that may still be simple. It will take you a few hours but you will know door construction options if you go through this catalog from Walzcraft .Everything possible is listed. Your cabinetmaker can order from them.

You are lucky to have an actual cabinet maker. He will have multiple design books with door styles and can help you with your decision. They can get as custom as you want to pay for.

my DH didn't want Shaker, wanted to lean more ornate, while I strongly felt it would be overdoing a modest kitchen in a modest house.

Our cabinet maker had enough examples in his shop to choose a door style that will be a Shaker I was after, while dressing it up just a bit, with a nod to my DH's wishes.

We both love the end result, a lot.

Taking the inspiration pictures to your cabinet maker is a great suggestion.

Your cabinet maker is likely to have sample doors on hand. If you feel you'd like to look at more options, go to Big Box and sort through their huge collection of sample doors from multiple vendors. Take photos of ones that appeal to you.

I did read that inset cabinets may not be a great idea if you live near the ocean. which I do- although it is not terribly humid here. I'm trying to not get my heart set on anything before we meet with the cabinet guy.

One thing I didn't realize is that a lot of custom cabinet shops source their doors elsewhere. My cabinet shop orders their doors (unfinished) from Conestoga... understanding that made seeing what was available, understanding relative costs, and figuring out what I wanted a lot easier on my own time rather than as a time pressured decision in a cabinet shop that was over an hour and a half of round trip driving away. This information wasn't volunteered to me, I figured it out myself as we went through the process (basically I googled their door style code and it started to make sense how it worked).

Likewise, I had ruled out anything that was raised panel, but (at least with Conestoga) it's easy and no additional cost to make most if not all raised designs a flat/recessed panel by choosing a reversed raise profile.

Looking online then getting a sample door made to be sure worked better for me than just looking through a bunch of samples and picking one I liked.

To answer your second question, we paneled our 30" columns, both dishwashers and have a 48" wood hood. That much stainless would have been overwhelming in my kitchen. Just over 2 years and everything is holding up so well.

As an aside, I did full overlay, raised panel. Can post pictures if you are interested.

Funny thing I noticed today was that my master bath vanity is beaded inset. I never took much notice of it. With the amount of humidity that room gets we've never had an issue with doors rubbing.

My columns :) Fridge is on the left, only important because I love the versatility these provide. They are fantastic.

johnsoro25- that looks so nice!! Thanks so much for sharing. I really want to panel those bad boys, but I worry a bit about how to find handles I'll like that will go with the rest of the hardware I choose. Was that tough for you? How do you like your Thermador range?

The pulls weren't too hard to match. My cabinet pulls were through my cabinet installer, but I found the matching appliance pulls on Top Knobs. You will definitely need specific appliance pulls for these awesome and heavy doors ;) If you're really interested in paneling, maybe you could start your hardware search that way.

Thanks! No steam, I am going with a 60" because that smaller oven in the 48" I have now just never gets used. The steam oven looks awesome, but the size of it (and extra expense) made me pass.
