Wow, for months the name Shiloh didn't come up at all on this forum, and now it's all over. I'm a new Shiloh owner, just trying to finish up a few last details before I post pictures. Anyway, I LOVE the Wyatt door (#2). It was definitely a contender with me. However, like a few of the others who have posted, I think the Homestead (#1) door would be a better look for a painted, white door - very classic. (The picture Kompy posted looks great, though...I guess it depends on the scale of the door). I chose the un-creatively named "Square Flat" door style, in the un-creatively named "Red" stain on cherry (the same color as #2 pictured above). It's a flat panel door, but unlike these two, it has a bead aroud the inside edge of the frame. Originally I was really drawn to Shaker cabinets, but decided that the "Square Flat" veered a little bit towards traditional and would go better with my more traditional style house. I also wanted a glaze, and the bead gave the glaze something to stick to. To answer a couple of your other questions, Shiloh is headquartered in Missouri. They are only available east of the Rockies. (I'm in Texas.)

Casey -- that is really beautiful! Did you stain either the cherry or the maple? I really like the contrast. Raehelen -- the fir is what was there, so we're kind of stuck with it (it's through the DR and LR too so would be really expensive to redo). Among many other worries I have is the job our kids are going to do to the floors. Pharaoh -- we also looked at red birch, but thought it was too dark. Yellow pine looked very interesting, but the piece we looked at had lots of strong vertical lines and seemed very dramatic.

A customer found your older thread so I shall respond here also just in case someone else needs some reliable information. A good K&B designer looks at wear and tear also: your kitchen will be around for a long time and we want it to function well and look great for the next 20 years. Your contractor is likely trying to keep you happy long term and avoid disappointing warranty call backs. Yes, upscale kitchens do go with all the little details that wear better and the customer often does not pay for it. IMHO, chamfered corners look best on chamfered shaker doors. Ask for all your options if this detail is important to you. I avoid 90 degree corners because you can add so many better profiles that coordinate with the actual door design and crown profiles. Things to consider in modern design... Ultra modern looks best with another finished edge to add distinctive shadow lines. The 90 degree square is fabulous in acrylic or metal edged doors becasue the crispness is caught in the actual material. 2 little fishes' yellow kitchen is gorgeous and because of the style would look fine with timely wear on edges. It is a highly ornate kitchen, not a simple design that Joyz is considering. If you do use a profile on edges ensure that every exposed edge has a profile.

Inset describes the door type. According to the attached article door style refers to the type of panel, they refer to 4 basic types including recessed which can be called Shaker among other things. What may impact the price is the method of construction - how the frame is joined and the material in the recessed panel and how it is finished. My understanding is that you want the recessed panel to be finished before assembly (at least partially) so if there is movement in the frame what gets exposed will be finished. I am under the impression that it is better if the recessed panel is either MDF for a painted finish or veneer over plywood\MDF for a stained finish (this will also provide a more uniform appearance on the panel) as this will usually mean the door will contract or expand less in its' frame than if the centre panel is made of solid wood. If doing a painted finish you could go to a solid MDF door which can be routered out to look like a recessed panel but be one solid piece that is not subject to the natural movement of wood (MDF is more dimensionally stable than solid wood). My Mom went with a thermofoil finish over a solid MDF door - one of the characteristics of an MDF solid door is rounded interior corners - the routered groove in this particular company's product helps visually disguise it but if you look closely you can see the corners are all rounded.
