Cabinet crown molding, yes or no?
Comments (11)Thanks for everyone's responses! KayceeeFL, thanks for the picture. It really was interesting to see the same cabinet both with and without crown molding. mtnrdredux, I kind of agree with you. Our current house is very simple and has low (less than 8' ceilings!) so the crown was a total no-go here. It's the 9' ceilings in the new place that have me wondering. Misstella and mcmjilly, we don't want to go to the ceiling. That's definitely too much for our style. artemis78, yeah, I hope we don't have that problem. But again, I don't think we want to go all the way up to the ceiling. I've asked the KD to let me know exactly what crown he was talking about and what the price is. It gets increased from "regular" pricing because we have that darn custom stain upcharge. I wish we didn't have it, but I hated every single color stain they had, and I wasn't willing to compromise on this. We're cutting back on flooring costs to cover the kitchen costs. We can always replace carpet in 5 or 6 years, but I'm not re-doing this darned kitchen! We'll make a decision after we hear the price and see the crown sample in person. Thanks everyone!...See Morecabinet crown molding or house crown molding?
Comments (11)ffjunk, of course it's a personal choice, but thought I should add, we have a situation similar to yours, with a pass-through window between painted cabinets, as well as a pocket door between a cabinet and a cabinet pantry. Our cabinet crown molding, and our whole house crown molding are the same heights, but different cuts, so the choice was easier for us - keep the same crown molding throughout the kitchen, though it is open concept. We are using stop blocks at the pocket door crown as the pantry is a stained along with the crown molding above it, and the cabinet adjacent is painted, along with the crown above that. The trim around the door will be painted the same as the cabinet/cabinet crown molding. Our ceilings are 9'. We are also using a stop block where the whole house crown meets the kitchen cabinetry crown - it would be very difficult to both cope and scribe the crowns to match and we prefer the stop blocks. I don't have photos as we are still in the midst of remodeling and our cabinet maker has yet to bring and install the stop blocks....See MoreCrown molding over cabinet molding
Comments (5)Thanks. The challenge is I want the crown for the living room, so basically trying to determine if cabinet reality is a deal breaker (vs just less than ideal) since I’ve never like how “unfinished” the living room looks. I would not create a soffit. I’ve found a few pictures of homes with my situation with crown but not many so it is hard to visualize since mine seems thicker. I may be out of luck in living room I guess...See MorePlease help me find crown molding for my new shaker kitchen cabinets
Comments (4)There is a difference between cabinet molding and crown molding. Cabinet molding goes on top of a cabinet and is usually a solid piece with a 90deg back to attach to the cabinet. A crown molding attaches to the ceiling and is a flat decorative piece of stock cut at angles to fit the ceiling and wall/cabinet top. Difference is ether are also different profiles for each. Go to a dedicated molding store not box store. It will actually be cheaper also....See Moresilvia_2007
