? for those who have wrapped their trees for winter protection
Comments (3)There isn't a consensus amongst the community of horticultural gurus about wrapping trees to help with winter sunscald. Around here we do recommend wrapping thin-barked trees like linden, honeylocust, and especially red maple because we have such a great fluctuation in winter temperatures. A logical explanation (one of several) is that the low south and west winter sun warms bark and tends to create a false break in dormancy in the cells on those sides of the tree during warmer spells. Then when hard cold weather returns the cells are damaged, often killed. The WHITE geotextile wrap makes the most sense to me. Its light color doestn't heat the trunk as much and it dries out quickly after receiving moisture. Ken is correct in that it is better to wrap late vs. too soon. It is not the cold, but as he says, the warmth in winter that hurts the bark. If you wrap your trees, be sure to start at the bottom and wrap to the top so that the overlap sheds as much moisture as possible. Do not use tree wrap over damaged areas that are already exposing dead wood as this can promote fungal activity. Three or four turns of electrical tape at the top and bottom works pretty well to hold the wrap until the tree leafs out the following spring, when the wrap should be removed to prevent harboring insects. Comments (35)I can't believe the ones criticizing sandy for her observations. I had a friend just like what sandy has described. For some reason (being co-dependant) or other, she didn't leave him. He did just what sandy described one time. Friend and I were in her kitchen getting a meal on the table. The guys were outside and friend's husband nudged my husband and said, "Watch this." Then he proceeded to yell that he wanted an iced tea and friend was to get it for him...pronto. Well, like I say, we were busy and the guys were doing nothing. She literally almost jumped out of her skin to get him a glass of tea. I told her to tell him to come in and get it and she said, "Oh no..I couldn't do that!" My husband was livid and we never went back....but, this was just one example of what I witnessed..which I am sure is the same with sandy...just one nail in a board of nails....she was just giving an example. This friend of mine would say, "If you're going to be a door mat, you're going to get stepped on." But..she was a living example of just that. The friend is a friend...you hate to drop out of their lives because of their poor decision to live with a bum, but that's what I finally did...just dropped out. This upset her very much, but I couldn't just go on watching it...now I don't have to see it. But..maybe sandy is a better friend that I was...I think it "is" her business if she is going to remain friends with this woman...it is right that she offers help....See MoreHow long does one stay in a house they do not like?
Comments (12)@EngineerChic - there are many things we don't particularly like about the location so listing them would be an arduous task. To your point, my anticipation is it will though take a while to sell though. It's a unique lot layout with farmland meeting up with 95% of our back lot with the remaining 5% being the far lot of a school. Though many people have bought and sold homes here with the school, I just anticipate it being a stumbling block. I'm personally considering 18 months once the ball gets rolling but it's only my guess and no definitive opinion given yet. Some of the existing neighbors here look at it as a buffer to not letting sex offenders move into the neighborhood so it provides some sort of safety net for the kids plus easy walking distance to school if desired. @ Andrew.. It's not easy but timing is everything as they say and we're trying to not do this in haste but somewhat prudently - if there is such a thing. @bill and kats - we have 8 months in an emergency fund which wouldn't need to be tapped for the move. Enough additional cash reserves just to cover moving expenses but not much more. That being said, you can never have too much cash available. Assuming the house we are in isn't sold at a fire sale price, we'd pull enough equity from the current house to get up near a 50% down payment on the next house. Worse case scenario 40% down payment for a fire sale. Is my wife being cautious? Yes and we both are as we weigh the decision of "when". Is it over cautions? I wouldn't point the blame on her for that either. Though we both agree it's time to consider moving on, it may be me who is a little more anxious to do it sooner than she....See MoreHow many trees do you have?
Comments (53)Lol...you are all too funny....Trust me when I tell you, the most painful part of bringing them is when you have to cut them back..ARG...It's a lot easier to keep them tidy and bug free when you cut them back. Too, if you have too much growth on top and not enough sunlight, then they will tend to throw off leaves and branches to compensate for weak roots..Not to fear.. Think ahead of time how at what temps you will store them all, how you can take preventatives measures to avoid pests, how much light you will need to keep them happy, and which ones you know will take the least amount of sunlight to get through winter..Just helping you all think ahead of time while you all continue this citrus fever.. Most people have lots of rooms, but not every tree gets the sunniest spot in the room)...See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
