Trane 5 Ton A/C and 95% Furnace Price Check
Comments (7)That price quote sounds out of line... something doesn't add up. I'm in the SouthEast, where cost of living is generally lower than most other parts of the country. For lower end equipment (13 SEER A/C with 80% furnance), I didn't get any quotes below $6,500. Most quotes for equipment that qualifies for the tax credit were generally closer to the $8,500 number. In the end, we went with a recomended private licenced contractor that got us a system to qualify for the tax credits at a cost just a little south of $8,000 and it seemed like a bargin. Equipment cost sounds about right, but the labor cost seems low. The worry there is that it's an installer that might be taking short-cuts to come in as a low bidder. What I learned from my experience in getting the HVAC system updated is that WHO is installing the equipment is more important than WHAT is getting installed. Basically, I've been told that most manufactures are getting major components (like the compressor) from the same source. But it's also possible to take short-cuts to get a system installed. A short-cut system WILL run. But the prognosis for long life isn't as good. Basically, you can get a longer life with cheap equipment installed correctly than you can from expensive equipment installed poorly. So my advice to people who are looking to replace their HVAC system is to get a quote from three or more places. No one can properly quote an HVAC install without a sight visit. Use that time of the sight visit to in effect interview the company/installer. You SHOULD get quotes that are all about the same even if the equipement isn't exactly the same. Ignore quotes that are "out-of-line", and then of the quotes that are left, ignore cost and go on your instincts on which contractor is likely to do the best job....See MoreXV80 / XR95 / XV95 Cost Difference
Comments (28)I've checked with two different Trane dealers and both told me that according to the Trane "dealer website" there is no information about a new 5-ton 65k/100k XV95 or any indication that one is being manufactured now or will be. According to my dealer this phantom furnace is "on order" for me but it now appears my dealer is lying or stalling for time, for some reason. They have a contractual obligation to remove the 120k XR95 they installed and replace it but now they have gone silent and aren't responding to my emails. The last conversation was less than pleasant when I told them that because it was their error I had no intention of paying for another HERS refrigerant charge test. Does anyone have any information on this XV95 that is "supposedly" being made. Maybe someone reading is a dealer and can verify? I think they're peeing in my hand and calling it lemonade and I'm about to call them out on it. Thanks for the help....See MoreTrane Split System - Good Match - Price
Comments (10)I just had a similar system installed in July here in Mississippi but have the XR-15 4 ton version AHRI# 3962232. We share the same furnace. Total $6,707 before tax. Installer is an old family friend. They were able to use my existing concrete slab and line-set. Included new pan and drains, overflow switch, dryer, hard-start preventer, new entry and exit plenums, 1 year labor warranty. I provided a LUX TX9000TS programable stat from Lowes. The 4 ton XR15 compressor came with a noise blanket so am assuming your 3 ton XR15 will too?? Inside and outside fans are very quiet. You'll like the constant torque 3/4 HP ECM motor on the TUD1C080A9H4 furnace. Note that the blower speed factory default is wired for medium-low (yl/wh wire). Within a week I changed to medium-high (bu/wh wire) with the installer's blessing of course. Heat & humidity is about the same here as in FLA and so far no issues. Energy consumption is exactly half of what my old 1986 Trane unit was using so you'll like that too. Looking forward to filing for the Tax Credit....See MoreHow high is this Trane quote?
Comments (31)Just thought I'd post a follow-up to this old string. The furnace and A/C were installed on the day the contractor said (12/30), so they qualified for the tax credit. The employees were pretty much at our house all day and put in the Carrier furnace, A/C, thermostat, and humidifier, and they re-routed the water line to our wash basin instead of outdoors where the water previously pooled somewhat in our backyard and could get icy. Within a week or two, the condensate pump stopped working so the furnace stopped. The humidifier never seemed to work correctly to that point either. The pump was faulty and was replaced. The humidifier had something wrong, and it was fixed too. Now the humidifier works, the furnace works, and all is well. I have a feeling that the problems might not have occurred with the Trane dealer, who seemed more involved personally than this contractor. Nevertheless when I mentioned that things weren't working, they got fixed immediately. Overall, I'm very happy to have a 2-stage furnace and the A/C (which I have not checked yet, of course) than the 1-stage Trane that was priced very high. And considering how hard it was for them to get the coil in our enclosed furnace area, I'm glad I went with the smaller coil. Thanks for your help with everything....See MoreMichael Hess
