Casement or Double Hung Windows?
Comments (11)We have Casement and Double-Hung. I am no expert. The following is our experience and research info. Good windows from reputable manufacturers, big or small, will seal well and not have unreasonable infiltration. A company may sell different lines from entry-level to higher-end and each line may have different infiltration rating. You can check the ratings published by the manufacturer to get one that best fits your requirements. In general, casement is supposed to seal better than dbl-hung and slider is supposed to be the hardest to seal tight. Again, good companies knows how to seal them tight, sliders or otherwise. Draft in general has three sources. One is poorly sealed windows, another is poorly installed windows with gaps and seams open to the outside and the other is poorly constructed windows. A properly installed window can seal tight against infiltration but if it transmits heat or cold readily from the exterior to the interior due to poor design or material, then a draft will form as interior air passing the window is rapidly heated or cool. Either case, air movement will happen by the windows. Note that "cheaper" windows often are poorly designed and constructed and will be drafty. We lived with a house full of these when we bought our place and ended up replacing all of them. So in many cases, we do pay for what we get. Modern windows use all sorts of thermal breaks to limit or prevent such contact-transfer of thermal energy. Low-E coating is very effective at keeping heat out in the summer and warmth in during winter months. Double-pane construction with gas-filled space is another method to limit energy transfer. Ours are of such construction and have lived up to expectation. We are currently smack dab in the middle of CA's Summit Fire that started last THursday. Our house has been covered by thick smoke all this time and no hint of smoke in our house yet. Both the dbl-hung and casement are doing their jobs. Good luck with your research!...See MoreDouble hung vs. casement to replace existing windows?
Comments (4)7'3" is pretty big for a casement. When open, that size sash would put a lot of pressure on the hinges & operator. If you are leaning toward casements, and don't mind tearing the old frames back to the studs, then you might want to consider casements with transoms. Most manufacturers have the ability to provide detailed drawings of window combinations, so experiment with styles that might interest you....See Morewindows double hung casement awning height etc
Comments (4)One issue with wide casements--they swing well into outside walkpaths, etc. if those run alongside of the house outside the installation. Recently found myself almost braining myself when watering a flowerpot below an open kitchen window. We had to remove casements from our plan for lobby area when we realized they might smack close-by vehicles, bikes, etc. and would crowd the people who walk around a vehicle. Ended up with high awning windows, but could have done slide-by or double hung, I suppose. But by then I had thought hard about what a driveway view would be like and decided I wouldn't miss it....See Morereclaimed casements in double-hung windows
Comments (7)Three of the vinyl windows are 26.75in wide and the other four windows are 21in wide. The reclaimed casement windows are 22in wide. So they're a bit narrow for some openings and a smidge too wide for the others. Height-wise, the reclaimed windows are 2 inches taller than the vinyls. There are other bungalows from the same year on my block, and those that have their original windows have casements in the front of the house. So it's possible that we're actually returning to a more original look. Tell me more about the flashing. I have other casements (different style, though) that we restored, and we weatherstripped them. There are storm windows on the outside. We haven't had any issues with water with those...Is there something else you'd recommend we do differently with our new window project?...See Moreroarah
