I think I planted my rooted cutting too deep
Comments (2)I wanted it at the original level, but the soil kind of fell off from around parts of it, hope it didn't rip any roots out. I expected to see more of a root ball as big as it is. You have no idea how I babied that thing all winter. Who knows what's in my soil? I dug a hole, broke up the dirt and planted it. That is a horrid place with dryness in the summer, drains very well, and I'm running out of places to put things until I get my next project underway which will mean rototilling. That will help a lot. The soil was nice and moist and broke up well. We'll just have to see how it does, sure hope it makes it. I was tired from other digging and just wanted to get it over with. I'm not used to this at all. I'd better get used to it, huh? Thank you for giving me hope about that. It has a lot of leaves on it, probably needs all it can get though....See MoreBest way to root dischidia cuttings?
Comments (3)I did this early in the summer with the one that has the round leaves about the size of a dime, maybe smaller...first I tried stem rooting, and three rotted off at soil level. So I took the two remaining and used hair pins to fasten them flat to the soil, misting and watering as needed all summer...This was how I had success rooting rosary vine and hoya curtisii. Anyway, that was in June, I just noticed last week that one of the stems is sprouting a new stem. So far so good- but it may take a while! I know what you mean about the EA soil, especially after the plants spend even more time getting drowned by the employees at whereever you got it. If I see a plant that looks like it has been at the store too long, I will usually not buy, unless it is one I have been desperately looking for. And the dischidias are so hard to repot!! Good Luck...See MoreI think I finally figured it out!
Comments (16)Somehow I missed this thread. Boy, can I empathize! My house is a converted church and we have 4 (FOUR) closets in 3000 sf. 3 are the size of small coat closets, one is a bit larger. And, there is only a small galley kitchen, no pantry. Yes, this does make it hard to organize!!! Though this house is roughly 3X the size of our old one, there is less than half the storage space. There is only so much stuff you can get rid of! Of course, we spent all our $$ on the house, so remodeling is not an option in the near future. I put cabinets over the toilets - big enough for hand towels and washcloths and shampoo, etc. I keep the rest of the linens under the bed (in rolling drawers.) I still have to keep the vacuum cleaner behind the sofa (and my guitar underneath)! We have a large laundry room and I'm trying to figure out how to make better use of that space. What is frustrating is that there is space that we don't really use, but I'm not clever at trying to convert this space myself. The house is all windows, too, so that really cuts down on available wall space; the third floor is an attic conversion - very steep walls and not conducive to practical storage. If I had a nickel for every time I've banged my head up there! I did buy a couple of big melamine cabinets (garage quality) to store stuff in, and that has helped a little. Glad to know that I'm not the only one with this problem! I spend a lot of time on the home decorating forum and just drool over those new houses with big pantries and huge walk-ins. Good luck and if I come up with any brilliant ideas you'll be the first to know!...See MoreI think I have learned the best way to resolve contractor disputes...
Comments (4)Great suggestion. I think it's a good idea for anyone who is building a home, with or without a gc, to keep a video and/or photo diary of the entire process. It's especially important to document everything before the drywall goes up since that work will be hidden by the end of the project. Just give your home the "once over" with your phone camera at the end of every day or every few days. You'll end up with visual evidence of the work performed if any issues arise. There is a second benefit to recording the construction process. Knowing that the process is being documented will mostly like decrease the possibility that tradesmen and the gc will cut corners and perform subpar work....See MoreDingo2001 - Z5 Chicagoland
