Comments (55)Cynthia: you are my savior many times !! THANK YOU. In June you saved me from killing Firefighter the 4th time. Thanks to you, I took that off from my buy-list, and Roses Unlimited gave me Pretty Lady Rose instead (bunnies killed that along with acidic grass clippings in 2020). I thought about buying Firefighter as grafted since I killed the own-root 3 times, then thanks to your post, I won't attempt it as grafted. Here's how I killed Firefighter as own-root 3 times: 1) 2014 tree-root invaded the 3rd-year own-root Firefighter. I should had moved it, but left it there, so it died when cane-borers took over due to lack of calcium (trees steal lots of calcium and water). 2) Bought 2nd gallon-size Firefighter. Since it's low-thorn waterhog, I experimented planting it next to a rainspout. It died from freezing rain in winter. 3) Bought 3rd band-size Firefighter. I don't trust my zone 5a winter, so I potted it inside my unheated garage. In Feb. the temp. inside my garage was freezing single-digit. My refrigerator broke down, and I was busy storing food inside the garage and I forgot to cover Firefighter with a thermal blanket....See MoreWhat is your most vigorous citrus tree?
Comments (15)Hi Davecito, Please keep us posted on your seedlings. I am especially excited about your tangelo. I know these are grafted trees so I will be curiuos if you can get it to bloom in a few years and if the fruits are of any quality or not. Mike, LMAO!! I told ya I got that mango!! There are probobly around a dozen or a few more in the country and I had to have it. As far as room for them all, I don't know what I am going to do yet. Most will stay upstairs and that is why I am looking into the supplemental lighting. Thanks for that link. I have been there before but I never saw your lights. I will probobly order from them though. I will post pics of my new mango tomorrow when it arrives. Though its total travel time will only be about 2 days, I still worry with it coming bare root all the way from Hawaii. Fruits are supposed to be the cream of the crop! For that reason, it will be worth finding the much needed space. I am also going to be selling and trading most of my cherimoya seedlings. I don't know of too many people who don't like the cherimoya fruit. I think I need to send you a seedling. You can expect fruits from even a seedling in as little as two years!! I do wish the meyer grew more vegetation but I have at least 75 lemons now. I am going to have to figure out a solution to supporting the fruits so I don't risk the limbs snapping from the heay weight of all those fruits. I cannot believe how large the biggest fruits are!! I will get some upclose pics so you can see what I mean. The Oro shocked me. The one that came back from the brink of death actually was wilting even when the soil was still moist. I watered right away but I still had a lot of bud drop:( Fine with me since I really want both of my Oro's to grow larger so I can try these extra sweet grapefruits. Many thanks to you man for intoducing me to them and Four Winds. Keylime unfortunetly will require myself to pollinate it. I don't like it but it is needed. I only got one fruit on a hundred flowers!! Zecowsay, Your reports also mean a lot to me considering we both garden in NY. I had the identical situation with my ORo that you did. This tree is the stangest citrus I grow. The new growth is nothing like my other citrus. You think you have buds that are going to grow more branches and it seems like they have just stopped growing for a few weeks and then PRESTO!! They start to grow. DId you allow any fruit to hold yet? I know this isn't the forum for this but can you give me advice on caring for an adenium in the winter? Email me if you like. Thank you everyone for your responses. It is very interesting to hear your reports. Did I mention that my keylime is growing in MG citrus and cactus soil? I have not done anything to improve drainage. I wonder if the rootstock could be used for grafting producing a tree that would be more resistant to root rot. What do you guys think about that? Comments (7)Glenn is a medium-vigor cultivar imo. It can get big if you let it but it will take just a little longer than the more vigorous growers. These are some other cultivars besides VP and Kent that will get huge *relatively* quickly if you let them: Haden Edward Zill Tommy Atkins Jakarta Bailey's Marvel Parvin Southern Blush Bombay and there are plenty of others. But if you want a tree that's going to grow really fast, its hard to go wrong with VP. Its almost like the bamboo of mangoes. I would probably lump Kent into the above group and of that group would probably rate Tommy Atkins as the most vigorous, but I wouldn't recommend planting one....See MoreWhat is your most decorative citrus tree?
Comments (72)Thanks all, I hear you Laura my eureka is constantly flowering but never does anything. It is just getting a new flush of leaves now though which is nice. And it's still basically a stick. I just saw some fruitlets on the kumquat now too. I'll let that one grow fruit!...See Morecalamondindave
