How old were you when you were in menopause?
Comments (53)The following is the Q&A on Late Menopause: Q:"Are there any advantages to still having periods at the age of 56? Is there a benefit to late menopause, or is it better to undergo it earlier? "  Rosemary, Pennsylvania A: Having a late menopause (menopause after the age of around 55) is a double-edged sword. There's some evidence that a later menopause carries a decreased risk of coronary heart disease, but there may also be a slightly higher risk of breast cancer. However, the associations between these health conditions and menopause aren't very strong. The other good news is that there are ways to avoid many health problems  such as doing regular exercise, following a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight, and so forth. There is an association between menopause and smoking  smokers often have an earlier menopause. You are probably a nonsmoker, though, which is also good for your health. Keep in mind too that 56 is well within the normal age range for menopause, though it's toward the upper end of the spectrum. So you have nothing to worry about right now. Comments (49)I think a good addition to this discussion is how my parents got married. It was August 3,1935. The impact of the Depression was still felt and so couples delayed getting married for financial reasons. My parents' crowd of friends included 4 unmarried couples and one married couple. They were all in their 30s and even early 40s. My mother was a preacher's daughter, but her father could not perform the ceremony in those days as my father was (Chicago Irish)Catholic. So everyone wanted to elope. They put together a caravan and traipsed all over central Illinois that day to each other's weddings. Dad had a friend who was a priest in Toluca, Illinois, so that was where they were married. Then they all went off for their honeymoons....See Morewere you happier when you were younger
Comments (22)Can't say. I had always been a happy, healthy, optimistic person, married to a happy, healthy, optimistic man. We worked hard, saved what we could, put our six happy, well-adjusted kids through college, loved each other, enjoyed life as we went through it while looking forward to the future. Three years ago, on the brink of retirement in our early 60s, we were each diagnosed with cancer within seven weeks of each other, and we were both expected to have died by now. Neither of us has died. While we were convalescing, hub's company abruptly changed the retirement plan, leaving us broke. I have watched my sunny husband become sad and worried almost beyond his ability to cope. I am helpless to change anything about our situation and it is breaking my heart to watch his heart break over what we hoped would be. Hub has had one life-threatening illness after another these last three years, but no return of cancer. No matter how optimistic or happy or healthy and careful you have been your entire life, sometimes life throws bombs at your head and it's hard to keep your chin up. Health and money. If you've got those...... Sherry...See MoreQOTD - How old were you when you started quilting?
Comments (14)Valarie, I love your class story! I learned to knit when I was very young (around 5 or 6) and when I was around 7 my mom took me to knitting classes at Sears. She would drop me off at the classroom and go shop. The adult ladies in the class (who all seemed quite ancient to me LOL) just loved having a little kid to teach! One made me a knitting bag and others gave me tools like row counters and yarn needles. I learned to sew clothes when I was young, too. My mom sewed all our clothes. She made quilts, too I remember going off to 7th grade in an outfit I had made. The first time I remember quilting was when I was in high school - I started a quilt that I designed (a log cabin variation). It's king size, all hand cut with scissors and templates, hand pieced, and hand quilted. I have no idea what got me started on it, but it took a very long time to finish it! I kept making clothes for myself and DH. When we bought our house 23 years ago I decided the space above the mantle really needed and Amish quilt. After that one I made lots of other wall hangings, then about 10-12 years ago I attended the quilt show put on by the local guild. I just loved the quilts so I joined the guild and started seriously quilting. I have lots of photos in albums and on the computer - I should try to catalogue them. I have no idea how many I've made.
