I'm so sorry! I still have the very first spatula I ever bought and refuse to give it up. I still use it almost daily. I'm very sentimental about kitchen stuff, because some of it was gifts from my parents when I moved out of the house into my first apartment (40+ years ago, so quality stuff that has lasted this long). I cry whenever one breaks. It's like losing a member of the family.

Oh, that's so sad! Condolences for sure.

I can empathize. A couple of years ago I was carrying a new planter and tripped, and in trying to save the planter, I broke the spoon rest my best friend had given me while we were still in school. What worked for me was replacing it with something special, so that when I see it, it reminds me of the old one, thereby still reminding me of my friend.

If you can't repair your spatula, as Dcarch suggested, maybe you can frame it? Make a kind of kitschy collage with it, and snapshots of the celebrations it contributed to?

I can empathise! I broke my glass Pyrex measuring cup a few days before Christmas. It was a shower gift (in a collection of many useful cooking utensils) 35 years ago. For all the times that thing bounced across the floor, I was amazed when it actually broke falling out of a lower level drawer.

Wow, I just broke my glass Pyrex measuring cup too, the day before Christmas, the one that has 4 cups. That's 2 things in a week. And I'd had that one for many years, too. All I did was accidentally let it drop about a half an inch back down when I went to pick it up. What's next??

Oh, Ritaweeda, you have my sincere sympathy for your losses. One is bad enough, but two in such a short period of time is devastating. Hopefully, no more, although they do say things happen in threes.

The loss of favorites is endless....a new to me mixing bowl from a yard sale, used twice, took a hit from a small pyrex. Pyrex is fine. Bowl was a dollar but never got a chance...

I gave away old Moulinex food processor DH purchased decades ago, talk about sitting in the doghouse!

I put a search on the eBay and waited for 5 years, one day the exact model showed up. When I received it in the mail, it was one of my happiest days.

Googled matfer spatula. There are a lot of them. looks like a fun catalog to browse.

Oh, I am sorry. I broke Grandma's old Peach Luster Pie Plate and cried. Lakeguy/David sent me a nice new Emile Henry replacement, so I smile now when I use that, remembering a friend that cared enough to cheer me up.

I nearly had a fit when my old microwave blew up. (sigh) It was an old Tappan, and had one setting: On/Off. I bought it when Amanda was born in 1982, my ex-MIL scornfully referred to it as a $100 baby bottle warmer. I loved it, and had to replace it with a new, handy-dandy-got-a-button-for-everything model. That lasted less than a year, the old one lasted about 25 years! I've had four since then.....

Oh Annie! My first microwave was a Tappan too, got mine in 81 & it died Christmas Eve 2005. I don't know how many I've gone through since, but a lot! Don't have much from my mother's stuff, she died when I was 10 & stepmom tossed most everything. All I have is a plastic cake plate/cover. A pain to clean cause it is supposed to look like cut glass, & the top is cracked in 2 places, but I can't get rid of it. DH always uses it when he bakes his cakes.

My sympathies--I, too, am very attached to my favorite kitchen helpers. Last year I broke my large green glass Martha Stewart mixing bowl I've had for decades. I remember buying it in a set, at KMart, and they no longer carry them. I was watching a set on eBay, when a friend dropped by unexpectedly. I forgot to check back, and missed the auction.

I also broke the dome to my Anchor Hocking cake plate, which had belonged to my favorite aunt, given to her by my grandfather. It's the family pieces that hurt the most. :(

I've not heard of Matfer, but I am indeed also attached to some very old kitchen gadgets, most of which used to be Mom's that she gave me when I was first starting out. Condolences!

Indeed, besides the sentimental value, some of those things were far better made than similar things today.

Every time I break one of those old Corning casserole dishes I got from her - it hurts. I have one original one left (I found a replacement for another at an estate sale last summer).
