What's the Oldest Kitchen Utensile in Your Kitchen?
Comments (48)Hmm, I am not "first owner" of anything too old. A French Press I've had since about 1980, is the oldest thing I suppose. As far as "previously owned" stuff, I use a slicer that my father-in-law used when he was a butcher shortly after WW2. It is about 18" long, slim flexible carbon steel, gets very sharp, I think of him when I take it out....See MoreJust curious - What are your strengths?
Comments (35)I'm a good baker. I can garden pretty well...at least I enjoy it a lot. I have a pretty good grip on athletic abilities.I am very strong and love a challenge. I would be a good friend...but don't have anyone right at the moment to practice on... I am speaking about local folks not the great people I consider friends here. I have a great color sense and decorate well in my own space. It takes me a long time to process what I want to do but then it looks wonderful when I am done. I have a really good sense of personal fashion and love to dress up even when it is just work out clothes I care how I look. I have great hair and skin and try to take care of it. I am an avid reader of women's history and biographies. I keep a very neat and clean house and personal space...no clutter for me anywhere. Have recently gotten even better. I think I am a good driver but my DH doesn't always...he can't drive and has never driven so that may be part of it. I think I am a good Mom now...I wasn't always...but that is for the other thread. I am a good wife and the best part of that is that after 41 years...Feb 8th...it keeps getting better and better. My family has always come first for me...sometimes I am over supportive according to others but for me I can't be too supportive or caring or loving of my "own". I'm a very hard worker when I decide to do something . I keep excellent financial records and make really good money decisions. I spend money on things that I want and I am very generous to my family for things that they want or need. I am not profligate but I also don't think there is any point in holding on to it since I can't take it with me. I am very adventurous...have had a lot of those and keep seeking out new ones. I used to be a very good RN and had a lot of faith in myself and my decisions. I graduated with a 4.0...no one in my school had ever done that before. People still call me for advice and listen when I offer it. I am surprised at this list. I hadn't posted since I really didn't think I had anything to offer...hm...guess I should go to the other thread now...since I have a lot that I could say on that one . I am so glad you started this thread. I have really learned a lot from everyone's posts. c I am a very good cook in a camping setting....See MoreWhat is your oldest 'treasure' you're holding on to?
Comments (39)This is not my oldest but it is one that I do treasure because it is practical and used everyday. It is a 30" laboratory sink from a university that was built in 1970. When they were renovating the labs, I got one of those sinks and it is now my refurbished "farmsink" that holds a prominent place in my kitchen. Another one is my large steamliner pressure cooker which is still going strong. Bought this in 1970 from an old woman who was leaving the island. Never had to service this vintage and cooks up a storm during the holiday seasons. There was another tall one that I had, can't remember the brand name but it had four stacked "trays" that would allow you to cook products of varied cooking time at the same time. That I gave to my mother when I was leaving home. It was too big for me then. Lastly, my grandmother had a brass plant pot that every weekend, as children, we had to clean it with burnt charcoal and lime juice. I could not wait to grow up to get the younger ones to do the cleaning. One day I went to a garage sale and found one just like it. I bought it because now I can buy silvo or brasso :). I love old things especially if they bring back memories. They must also be unique. Just my 2 cents....See MoreJust curious, did your granite fabricator give you the cutouts?
Comments (20)Hi Mgxmom, I tried replying to yur email, but got a send failure. Hopefully, you'll check the thread again. Here's my response below: I drove a few hours to check out my slabs in person. They don't photograph well, and I'm glad I made the trip, because they're really gorgeous in person as the salesperson had promised. There are things (like pits and cracks) that won't show up in pics, so unless you really trust the stone yard, I'd go in person. I looked at a number of slabs, some in pics and some in person, and my fabricator drove 2.5 hours to a stone yard to check out some slabs and make sure they were top quality. He was a totally objective party, and I was grateful that he helped me in my selection. For that reason, I'd suggest finding an excellent fabricator and getting slabs wherever you find the most beautiful ones. Good luck--Danby is wonderful marble!! Feel free to email with any questions, and I look fwd to seeing your pics. Best, Madeline...See MoreRelated Professionals
