Christmas gifts for the kitchen

Around here, these are called "tuna fish" bowls since their primary use is for chopping tuna out of a can. The previous bowl, purchased in 1976, cracked several years ago and went in the trash. Since then, I've been using some cheap laminated bowls from Publix that rarely last more than a few months. Suzi bought these online from Amazon (where everything else comes from these days.) They're around a 1/2" thick and solid wood. Right now they're baking in the sun after their second rubdown with bee's wax.

I'm curious why you use a wood bowl for tuna? I'd never have thought to do that, but there must be a reason you do? They are beautiful.

Chop, chop, chop. Plastic fails, metal dulls the mandolin, stone likewise.

Karen that is darling. I've already starting looking for houses, I want to glitter some myself for Easter. The ones that I did for Christmas would be perfect if they didn't have snow on the roofs. I want to find some a little smaller than the the Christmas ones. I haven't been able to find any of the little fences yet either, but they will turn up, GS season is just around the corner. Thanks for sharing that with me. Frou

I'm sorry about the link... let's try this one. The Apron Book It's very special indeed. Part of the reason for posting about it here is to honor her thoughtfulness and time she put into this gift. She has sewn some curtains and pillow covers but really doesn't care too much about sewing. And that just adds another dimension to the specialness of the gift.

I really like that doo-hicky blade thingy that I can scrape dough up off of a surface, or use to divide a lump of dough in two. I've started using it more frequently as I bake. I just can't remember what it's called. For a higher price bracket, a nice mortar and pestle would be a good gift. One that's large enough to do a lot with. I have a small one that I grind spices with occasionally, and I use it when I make my own salad dressing, or pesto, but mine is too small to make a good batch of pesto. I know that food processors make that a fairly easy job, but they're a hassle to clean, and I love using the pestle. Today I was crushing cumin seed for some lentil soup. It smelled so good, with the scent wafting up from the mortar to my nose. Of course, a modern young woman may look at you cross-eyed if you gave her something like that, but I'd love it. Weren't there some people here talking about some kind of dough whisk they really loved? Sally

Dear Kellied, I have a ceramic tile counter top. I obtained an 18x18 sample slab of marble from my husband's company, placed rubber "feet" on it, and use it every time I knead bread, roll out dough, etc. It's great! Claudia

Thanks for the explanation. I just flake mine apart with a fork, so couldn't figure it out!

What do you use for chopping? A mezzaluna comes to mind.

The one on the left is brand new, part of the gift. The other one is from the 50s. Stainless steel blade and cast iron handle.

I have an old old chopping bowl like that! :) Your new ones are very pretty. Interesting the way you make tuna salad!

I looked at my kitchen wishlist this year and decided not to send it to Santa, so I didn't get anything for the kitchen but a couple of Hanukkah potholders that my goddaughter made me. :)

Those are nice looking bowls. Talking about chopping, when we were in WV last June, I got salad makings for dinner. We just eat it as it comes out of the bag (prewashed and cut lettuce) and when I got the salad in the bowl, they brought out a chopper and chopped it up into little pieces. I didn't say anything, I can eat it whatever, I just thought it was different to want the salad all chopped into small pieces.

I have a cherished bowl like that given to me by my Mother years ago. I do keep it oiled and often beeswax for a sturdy sealed glaze. (i did treat it like crap for a while until i found it lovely). -tend to re-visit forgotten things. So glad it did not crack in my miss-use. !

Mine came with a olive wood handled chopper. I think she purchased on a trip to Europe...so guessing it is meant to be a herb/and or chopped salad server. Tuna or an anchovie salad fits that chop and toss, chop, and serve idea.

My Christmas was calm and all about needing sleep.

Happy to add my first Staub, a grain pot, and a couple enameled bowls for when we do 'tasting/testing' appetizers. We are eating more variety and mini meals. And DH gave me the classic garden Japanese garden knife.

-and then the box of fruit from Florida...oranges. I need to juice and freeze. oy.

We don't care much for orange being so sweet but so much better than cookies/bad chocolates. On the list to juice tomorrow.

Chopping the veggies at the same time makes a lot of sense; now I see how you do it. I don't add veggies to tuna, so it wouldn't have occurred to me that's why you would have a chopping bowl. Thanks for the further explanation.

Rita, I like my salads all chopped up, the texture is better for me than a big ole' piece of leaf that won't fit into my mouth without folding or cutting it up or dribbling dressing.

Sleevendog, I like that gray color, it's so nice and calm.....

Ricky, those are beautiful bowls. My Dad did some furniture building and I worked with him a little, so I see the beauty in wood. I love the grain, the texture, the colors, no two are ever alike when you are using wood.

I didn't get any kitchen items at all for Christmas, Elery and I agreed not to exchange gifts, so he bought me a little video camera "to take pictures of the kids at Christmas. I'm not a big fan of gadgetry, so I haven't learned to use it yet, LOL. In fact, I haven't taken it out of the box, and his family has already been here and is gone!
