How cool is my new kitchen?!
Comments (47)Charlikin, I am so happy for you being so delighted with your very functional and beautiful kitchen. My dishwasher is on the brink and so is my stove so I will love to know which ones you bought that you love so well. I know I dislike my old stove so much that came with my home and is supposed to be self-cleaning but when I moved in there was pizza cheese and sauce all inside that I could not get out. I changed my refrigerator at the end of 2006 to a LG French Door Stainless Steel Refrigerator when my tiny almond Whirlpool Refrigerator died on me. I love the French Doors only because they do not bump into my small table's chair that is right in front of my refrigerator. I remember moving into my prior apartment that had a dishwasher and I was so happy. In fact my requirements for my townhouse was dishwasher, washer and dryer hook-up, and central air/heat. But I see now that I wish I had hot water heat since the air is so dry in the winter time despite a humidifier running all day and night. I am really happy for you. I am glad all that hard work designing the kitchen and making sure everything was done right paid off. I always love to read your posts....See MoreWhat's the first thing you'll cook in your new kitchen?
Comments (36)OK Celine, after the whole foods parking lot video, I just will never think of quinoa the same way. Though I'll know how to pronounce it: rhymes with "bra". As it turns out, we crawled into the chocolate chip and pancakes camp. I've yet to make the granola. But dd1 insisted on making spice bars for a school potluck (to which I'm not invited? wha?) and dd2 needed to make choc chip cookies (though this hardly needed baking as all she wanted was the raw dough in truth) and there were some rotting bananas that I had to make into banana bread. Then it was father's day so verbotten meat (lamb) got roasted and eggs had to be scrambled because life without scrambled eggs is pretty close to a life not worth living....Last night, like mnerg, we actually had pancakes (p. 357, Diet 4 Sm Planet) for dinner; that's how syrup-starved we all were. We've been busy here today! And the other night we did the obligatory paper-on-the-cc-burner to great acclaim. The young, strapping hungry hombres just-back from the field had to settle on outdoor-grilled food because I couldn't quite tackle the new indoor beast at the time, but we all enjoyed the simmer-road-show. But truthfully, the very first thing that got made? It was boiled water for pasta. Isn't that pathetic? The second was to stew up some inedibly sour fruit. Funny how plebeian cooking turns out to be. Recipe for green chile stew? Here's for spice bars: boil 1 cp water and 1 cp raisins, remove from heat, stir in 1/2 cp apple sauce (or oil) and let cool; add 1/2 c sugar before all the way cool. Stir in 1 egg when cool. Sift tog dry ingred and add to wet above: 1.75 cp ww pastry flour, 3/4 t salt, 1/2 t cloves, 1 t soda, 1 t cinnamon, 1 t nutmeg (opt: chopped walnuts, 1 t allspice(ick)). Bake 20 min in 13x7x2 pan @ 375. When cool frost w/butter-cream: 2 cp confect sugar, 1/4 cp butter, 1 T milk, 1 t vanilla....See MoreKitties and other 'helpers' in the kitchen :)
Comments (47)Akchicago - tell your cat I am giving him my own green eyed stare back, lol. I like animals, just not mixed with food and food prep, and I just am not a cat person. Hearing all these stories about animals and countertops and fur flying gives me the heebie jeebies. I grew up with poodles because my mother had allergies. We never had shedding in our house other than the guinea pigs I had, but they were never in the kitchen. I did not even know I had allergies too until I was an adult (or they got worse then). I am mostly allergic to cats and will get a red rash almost instantly if one touches my bare skin. Of course, I walk into houses and they make a beeline for me, while other agents or buyers are crouched down saying "here, kitty kitty" and being ignored. I am an animal magnet. It is so awkward because I don't want to offend any homeowners, but I do not want their cat to rub up against me. It is worse in the summer where it would be direct contact on my legs. If a house is not clean and has cats, my throat will close up a little, so I get the heck out. That is very rare though (knock wood). I am far from a germaphobe, but I avoid cat fur like the plague because it itches so badly if I make contact. I think that does not help me think of cats and kitchens being a good mix, even though those are separate issues. I am also not crazy about dog fur near food, but it does bother me less because I have never seen a dog up on a counter (although I bet some get up there). I do wash my hands after I touch a dog and am anywhere near food. I guess we all have our pet peeves (pun intended), but mine is not as socially acceptable as people who have other kinds. It seems like people are more offended if you are not into their pets than if you are not into their kids (whom I adore, btw). A kid with a runny nose does not phase me in the least nor does a big sloppy kiss but keep me away from cats....See MoreThe solution to keeping your helpers out of your prep space ...
Comments (7)I agree it could be useful, but just seems odd--I don't think I've ever seen a sink placed like that in any other kitchen layout. Adding: My auxiliary sink is useful, and was especially useful when the main sink was down during the remodel. And it was inexpensive to install because it is back-to-back with the main sink, and shares all plumbing, but it's not in the prep zone, therefore not a prep sink. It's only six steps away from the stove (I just counted), so in my small kitchen it's not a big deal to have someone else working there. It's easier to clean than my main sink--I usually thaw and rinse meat there for that reason alone, and we've kind of made the coffee maker a permanent fixture on the counter next to it, to keep coffee seekers out of the work areas. However, if I could have that gorgeous marble slab, I'd take any sink--or no prep sink at all....See Moreanoriginal
