Sowing help for a beginner
Comments (3)Don't give up even if your first efforts fail. You'll get the hang of it. I dampen the soil-planting medium prior to putting it in containers then I spray it with the sink sprayer to settle it and then let it drain. I put it in plastic containers--sometimes just margarine tubs, etc. and sometimes regular planting flats. Depending on the size and type of seeds, I make rows with a flat side of a pencil or broadcast the seed in small containers. Unless the seed requires light for germination, I cover them with a shallow covering of dampish planting medium. You need to make sure the seeds are in good contact with the soil so sometimes I tap the container on the counter and sometimes I gently pat the soil through the plastic wrap covering. I cover the containers with plastic wrap and put them in a warm place, sometimes on top of a refrigerator or freezer. Your seed medium does not need to be under lights until something sprouts, unless certain seeds need light for germination. Most seeds need darkness for germination. Your containers may be too close to the windows, or they may be too warm. If they are too warm and too wet they can rot. It depends on the special requirements of each type of seed as some are very soft and delicate and others have hard coats. Still, two weeks is not too long a time for some seeds to need for sprouting. DonÂt give up on them yet. If these fail, get some more seed and try again. I wish you well. Comments (29)The funny thing that got me ready for motherhood the most was that while I was pregnant with Rhiannon and couldn't get a teaching job, I worked in a nursing home. I did just about anything, and towards the end I did mostly baths. After changing all the adult undergarments a babies diaper was nothing. Also learned lots of tricks about putting on clothes on those who aren't cooperative. But the biggest thing was that we had residents that couldn't eat solids so every meal that they served, they would put in a blender. It could be a ham sandwich, pizza, roast, apple pie, broccolli, anything that the regular meals consisted of was purreed for the residents who needed help eating or didn't have teeth or other problems. I learned so much about respecting the elderly and have such an appreciation for them now because of my experiences. Stacie...See Moresize of ice cube tray
Comments (6)I agree, grab a tray of ice and toss it in. However, many people don't have ice trays any more, they have ice makers in their refrigerator. My ice trays hold 16 ice cubes and I'd guess, like Cathy, that they are one ounce each, so I'm also going with the 2 cups. Annie...See MoreFrozen fried onion cubes idea - with pics
Comments (13)Hi guys, this is very delayed, but I just figured out an easier disposable version for freezing onion cubes. Unfortunately, my Fuji finepix-camera from long ago went dead on me, so I can't provide a pic. Here's the alternate / easier / version: If Natures Yoke cage-free eggs are available in your area, since their cartons are made of clear plastic, they can serve as disposable onion containers. Natures Yoke cartons give you double the amount of compartments for the money, because of the flip-over egg-guard. Just cut them apart, along the "hinged" seam where it flips over, so that you now have two cartons, each with 12-compartments. Once you fill them with the diced-fried onions, you can cover each dozen with plastic wrap, then insert into plastic bags for freezing. You can also choose to fill just eight or ten compartments, and cut off the remaining compartments with scissors, to easily fit in your freezer. Once they're frozen, you just "pop" them out. For use in soup, I prefer only white-onions, and less-fried than my above picture. Otherwise the soup can have an off-taste. From the leftover compartments, hey, some people even fashion clear plastic flowers as seen on google images....See More- 9 years ago
