Translating languages on a tablet

A friend has an app on his phone that will translate foreign language into English. I wonder if the B&N tablet that's coming out for $49 will do that. Or is there something even cheaper? I don't have/want/need a cell phone. This would be used for translating web pages that don't have a translate button for me to click. I use google translate for text but some of the German documents are poor quality and I can't read them enough to retype what they say. The app he used wasn't perfect but if it tells me some words and I know some words I should be able to get the gist of it.

You can translate on line without any app.

Firefox also has an extension called IMTranslator

I use it as I often get these types of log files when helping at the forums.

I think she's saying she wants to translate text she has in image form but not in text form. That's a two step process -

1) Having an image with text on it.

2) Having software to do the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) processing.

Try looking at this link - apparently Google Docs can process image files (Jpg, etc) and pdf files. You need to present the software an image - either from a photo (hence, using a smartphone/tablet but also feasible with a camera) or a scanner made one of the text in question. Then, when the text has been recognized and processed into a text file, that you can copy/paste to Google Translate or any of the others.

True story coming up. I used to sing with our local symphony. One night at a rehersal, ( we were singing in German,) a member started laughing. He had translated the German into English, and it was really terrible. With Poetry, the meter is so important. words don't always have to rhyme, but there has to be a certain "beat" to it or it's just nice words strung together. It is very difficult to get the meaning and the flow of words in a different language.

Hey, I'm brazilian and since portuguese is really similar to spanish I can understand pretty much eveything. There are some changes I'd make.. any native spanish speaker please correct me. I'd remove the "en la" before germinaciÃ³n.. en la means AT, so it's like "sow seeds 1/4" deep, at germination.." The correct would be: "Siembre las semillas 1/4" de profundidad, germinaciÃ³n en 7 a 10 dÃas" In "las plÃ¡ntulas de trasplante un metro de separaciÃ³n, apoyar cuando sea necesario.", transplante should be a verb (transplant), but in this consctruction it's not.. "transplante las plÃ¡ntulas con um metro se separaciÃ³n" makes more sense to me. "Aproximadamente el 65-80 dÃas a la madurez." no need to use the "el".. just "Aproximadamente 65-80 dÃas a la madurez." And finally "Por favor, guarde semillas de sÃ³lo los mÃ¡s saludables y las plantas mÃ¡s fructÃferas. " to "por favor, guarde semillas sÃ³lo de lÃ¡s plantas mÃ¡s saludables e fructÃferas." So just in case you ever need to use it again, it's: Siembre las semillas 0,5cm de profundidad, germinaciÃ³n en 7 a 10 dÃas, transplante las plÃ¡ntulas con um metro de separaciÃ³n, apoyar cuando sea necesario. Colocar pajote debajo de las plantas, y dar agua cuando sea necesario. Aproximadamente 65-80 dÃas a la madurez. Por favor, guarde semillas sÃ³lo de lÃ¡s plantas mÃ¡s saludables e fructÃferas.

When I was in design school, I only bought Italian magazines, such as Casa Vogue and Interni, but that was back in the late 1980s. The Italian Casa Vogue is no longer in print, but I do searches in Italian for specific items that I want to research. I have also bought German magazines (since German is my second language - Italian is my third), but they tend to be rather boring and focus on price more than anything else, although I have not looked at any lately. Spanish is my fourth language (in terms of fluency), and I have found a few Spanish magazines that I like, but the Italian ones are still my favorites. I can also read French but do not have much interest in French furniture.

Yes, I've been doing the ocr conversion and then running it through translate. Time consuming. And to translate web site pages is equally time consuming. His little thingy was so quick. Not 100% accurate but I can fill in the blanks.

Your explanations aren't clear enough for me to understand what tasks you're trying to do.

If you're looking at non-English webpage, translation can be instantaneous. Simply copy the URL into the appropriate box of a Goggle Translate page and the webpage is reread, translated and displayed in the language of your choice. No need to use OCR.

Never mind. I don't know how else to explain it. google translate doesn't do images and running each web page through google translate is too time consuming. The phone app is perfect for what I need.

Maybe my explanation wasn't clear, I explained above how to do it. Typing the web page address into the box on a Google Translate page will translate the entire website.

See below screenshot of Google Translate (translate.google.com). In the box where the red circle is type in the web address of the foreign language web page you want translated

As an example, type in:

www.faz.net (the German language website of the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper)

Then hit enter, you'll see the FA webpage in English.

I read your posts carefully and spent some time trying to be helpful. Your questions were not clear.

You said you wanted to translate web pages and it was time consuming. With what I outlined, it's maybe 10 seconds per page. Nothing will be quicker than that.

I have a kindle fire so not sure about B&N but can you not get in their app store before you buy and see what app works with the tablet and what apps they have? I can see amazon apps from amazon.com without even owning a kindle. Mary
