Location of cold frame?

Subject: 2 hay or straw bale cold frames similar to this.

I have the option of glass and/or plastic covers.

Objective:
Late winter and spring starts from seed to be transplanted. Peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, e.g., for seed starting.

Locations?
South of the house. High sun: I've had to use welding tarp in this area over spring greens when it got hot and windy in summer. (I can still use the welding tarp like shade cloth.) This area is near an electrical outlet where I can hook up some heat for picky stuff like EGGPLANT. sigh Easy to get to, maintain and irrigate.

Northwest of the house at existing garden area in the open, but exposed to colder temps and wild bunnies. Not as convenient for me for irrigation. No electric heat options.

Front of the house sits nicely South, southeast. Everything loves to grow there because it gets great morning sun, but shade from the house after 1pm. Never grown stuff through the winter there, tho.

South too hot?
Straw or hay for the cold frames?

Straw or hay either one should work equally well. I like hay bales because they are packed together much more tightly than straw.

South-facing always is best because winter and early spring day length is so short and the sunlight is so weak. You do have to pay careful attention to venting, but that's true whether you're using a cold frame, hot bed, heavy-duty row covers over hoops or a greenhouse. I like the idea of having it as close to the house as you reasonably can in order to facilitate irrigation and heating on cold nights.

You might not even need to use a heat source because most hay bale cold frames will stay pretty warm (relatively speaking). Lots of people just pile a couple of bags (or more, depending on the length of the cold frame) of autumn leaves on top of the cold frame's top during intensely cold nights to insulate the glass or plastic top and hold heat inside the frame.

Have you considered digging down 18" and filling that space with a mixture of stable bedding/fresh horse manure to turn the cold frame into a hot bed? A GW member named BillP (may be rest in peace) who posted under the name GoneFIshin' always raised his seedlings east of Dallas, TX, in a hot bed whose bottom layer was stable bedding/horse manure from his daughter's horse barn. He had the most beautiful, most healthy seedlings every year, except for one year (probably 2007) when flood water from persistently heavy rainfall infiltrated his heat bed and sort of ruined everything. I don't think you have to worry much about persistently heavy rain causing much flooding up there.

Okay. Ty. I forgot about day lengths.

Every spring something comes up. Something big and time consuming knocks off most, if not all, my garden plans. I feel like I have a hole in my soul from not gardening.

The kids' school bungled things when kick starting their first year of curriculum. Then, they did it again at the end of the first quarter. We freaked again and studied from sun up to sun down for two weeks. Finally, I decided to keep at it and get ahead of the coursework so when the next their failure comes ....

So, this would help with gardening. The problem is always the seedlings. I'll get the garden bed ready for overwintering. Hopefully, the cold frame will help for spring seedlings.

Agreed. I did this last year (planted the fall crops a little late)and the plants grew during the warmer fall months, but once it got colder, the growth slowed to a standstill. The good news is that most stuff overwintered in the hoop house just fine and come spring the plants resumed their growth pattern. I was able to harvest most crops including bok choy, collards, cabbage, turnips, and carrots. Lettuce did not survive the winter freezes, but did last quite a while before our temps dropped below freezing. Susan

Don't see why not. Your cold frame sounds like a greenhouse ;) I practice the same starting technique with my greenhouse. The heater I have out there ensures the temp doesn't drop below 45 degrees at night. I'm always a little skittish moving things out for the first week until I have the temps well under control (ensuring the fans run during the day and heat is working right at night). So for the first few days to a week I'll select some "sacrifical lambs", a sampling of all the seedlings I have to move out, and set those out first. If they fair well after a few days to a week (and I become brave) I'll move everything out there.

Hoop frames or Cold Frames in Front Range- have you done this?

I'm a newbie and just purchased a couple of acres. I was originally thinking of doing a garden area and then having a large walk-in hoop house off to the side. However, space is a little tight (my garden plot just kept growing as I added new veggies to the plan!) and it occured to me that I could possibly combine the garden/hoophouse space. I'm thinking I could do a wood frame around the garden space and then do removable pvc/wood frames and plastic sheeting - put them on in the fall and take off/store in the spring. Do any of you more experienced gardeners have thoughts on the logistics/potential problems with this idea? Saving the space would be nice, but not if it will cause potential problems down the line. A couple of my concerns: -logistics of taking on/off the frames and plastic - would it interfere with getting cool weather crops out early/ late in the season? (ie, putting up the hoops making the cool weather crops too warm) - overworking the soil (thought I might divide out the hoop space into 3 sections where I left one bare and put compost on it in the off season, one that gets a cover crop, and one that gets planted?) - any other problems or potential issues that I'm not thinking of? Thank you for any advice!

Can I switch locations for cold air return and heat vent?

I eventually had my HVAC guy come out and asked him. He said it was okay to partially block the heat vent, but if it had been the cold air return it would NOT have been okay. So I happily moved the frig to it's best place and moved the frig right up against it. So the heat vent is about halfway blocked and I just put one of those magnetic vent covers over the half behind the frig. I'm not an expert, but I think it helps to force more air out of the half that's not blocked. So, unlike most kitchen renovations, this cost me nothing. Yay!
