In your neck of the woods, what do you call...?
Comments (203)For my job I need to take payment from customers (many of these are small businesses). It seems no one in Saskatchewan has a credit card! We have issues all the time because our customers (99.9999 % Canadians) don't have a credit card to make their purchase. They want us to bill them or mostly they want to go into a local office to pay cash. Most of the local offices of the company no longer accept cash payments which really annoys the customers. The lack of credit cards has been really surprising to my colleagues and I. I think checks are popular here (WNY) as many small businesses here don't like to take credit cards due to the high fees. Speaking to Canadians every day from Vancouver to Montreal I thought I could understand the accents. Went to see a band from Vancouver and talked to a band member during a break. Oh my gosh I could barely understand him. Actually much of it I just nodded my head to, no clue what he was saying. Just like the US, Canada is a very diverse population over many different regions. While communication is sometimes hard, overall it makes life more interesting. Recently was told of a "come and go tea" by a person in Windsor, had no idea what she was talking about. It was like a birthday party. Not sure if actual tea was served....See MoreWhat do you call your "athletic shoes"?
Comments (61)Around here is has always been pop. If you order Coke that is what you would get, maybe you would want something else, Pepsi? I don't drink much pop, mostly water and iced tea, not the sweet kind you buy, way too sweet for me. Sue in Central Indiana...See MoreWhat do your children in-law call you? How about grandkids?
Comments (72)Elmer, you said, "...times have changed and I suspect views and practices of the modern day aren't what you assume them to be." I don't live in a cave, Elmer! I'm not assuming anything! I know my DD and DS still call the parents of their friends and my friends Mr & Mrs. My daughter uses a dear friend of mine as her broker - she's known him all her life and she still calls him Mr. I have not lived in Los Angeles in over 34 years, but when I did, I never heard a child in my neighborhood or at my church, call an adult by his first name. And my CA friend's children still call me Mrs... I know what my children's grown friends on Martha's Vineyard call me and what my children call their parents. NEVER by a first name! My DGS informs me that only one of his professors at his Ivy has suggested that his students call him by his first name; he's quite young. All the rest are Professor.... One of the professors there is his godfather and he calls him Uncle Professor... and he loves it! He was a groomsman in my DD's and DSIL's wedding - he had been their professor - and they still call him Professor...and he has never suggested that this change. Elmer, I could care less where you've lived and worked. Clearly we move in very different circles, I would suggest that you not assume you know the social norms in mine. I do know them. The use of honorifics has nothing to do with being stuffy or not being casual; it's a sign of respect. We could use a bit more of that these days....See Moreelderly incontinence -- how do you talk to your parent?
Comments (33)My dad has had bowel and urinary problems for decades. The length he will go to in order to avoid just buying and using incontinence products is confounding to me. He gets violent when I even casually mention it. And he's getting funny about not wanting to do laundry so as to not wear out the washer and dryer. He's a wealthy guy, so I don't know where this is coming from other than part regression since he grew up poor, and part not wanting to deal with replacing an appliance, even though I would do it for him no problems. He has an anxiety disorder as well, so all this just ramps up his weird anxious behavior but he finds no peace in just dealing with it. As a woman who had to wear pads of one sort or another most of her adult life, wash out blood stains, suffered from chronic urinary tract infections, and as biologist, I just say get real and just do whatever, who cares. But that is lost on my dad. Not sure what the magic pill is for someone like him. Usually someone else who he isn't as invested in saving face in front of as opposed to a daughter, and doing it "in secret" or somehow on the sly is what seems to work for my dad. It's going to get worse for my Dad because he will not necessarily be on board with having himself checked for all of the conditions mentioned here, many of which I can see could or do apply to my Dad. So be thankful that at least you have the resources of the assisted living facility at your disposal. It's kind of frustrating to me that my dad really needs other people to assist him and he won't take simple help and assistance from me, but that's the way it goes. I think most AL places are aware of strategies to deal with this because it is a common problem and UTI's and other bladder and kidney problems are always something to look out for. And many can be treated and improved upon or at least dealt with to make the elder more comfortable....See More
