What Do Your Children's Spouse Call You?

Do your children 's spouses call you Mom, Dad, or by your names? Ours for the most part call us by our names and that is very fine with me.

Sometimes they might call us Mom or Dad.

I've never heard that "SWAN" but really that's it! They nickname it "Happy to Starve" in gastro school (per my gastroenteroligist) And many call it "Putnam's Syndome" but that's just a nick name as well given that Dr. Putnam has spent so much time analzying kids with this problem. They tell me it's a great deal like when you're told your child has died of SIDS. There is always a reason children die, but systemically they can't find the reason and so you get SIDS. With us, we got Putnam's or SWAN I guess (Dr Putnam is our doctor as well) :o( Eating disorders normally happen with children who have special needs, like autistic children, children with brain disorders, etc., but we don't have any of those problems so the fun part of this is dealing with insurance companies for treatment, when he has no official disease (his actuall diagnosis is Fail to Thrive without reason). The insurance companies seem to want him to go ahead and "Fail" and we insist that isn't the route we want to go. I learned abut the Kennedy Kreiger clinic on feeding disorders and while reading realized they were describing my child to a T! They do work with kids with much more significant issues involved in their eating problems (ie cleft pallet or inability to swallow etc) but they also have a place for the Jesse's of the world who just won't eat because it hurts. Somehow we need to figure out why it hurts before we begin treatment....that's the hard part. But fortunately we're going to do more poop testing first, instead of anything that will hurt him. Thanks for SWAN. I'm going to have to keep that on the tip of my tongue because I'm tired of having to explain this over and over and over to people who want to hear a name fancier than "Happy to Starve" (Which actually fits him to a T as well)

If the mom wants/needs it and the child ALSO wants/needs it, there is nothing wrong with three times a day. However, me, personally? I'd throw my phone away and send him a book of stamps if he called me that much. For me personally, that would be way too needy an expression, I'd be EXTREMELY worried about him and what was going on in his life. For him, it would be an unreasonable expectation on my part. He would cheerfully inform me of this fact. I would expect him to! I'm not so sure that "love" has so much to do with how frequently children speak with their parents or vice versa if the contact between them is reasonable. To me, there is probably a problem within the relationship if someone is feeling abandoned because of the lack of frequency, rather than the "expectations" which aren't being met. That's my take on it.

Stephanie, I know what you mean. I want to be fun and spontaneous but sometimes it's so hard when she won't eat her vegetables, or doesn't clean her room, to give treats and not turn into the "Mommy Monster"! Finding a balance between being the enforcer and friend. I feel so guilty so much of the time, I'm not doing enough, I could be doing more. It's really hard for me. This morning I thought I got out of the house before she woke up, but just as I left, here she comes out of her room "mommy mommmy" and my heart went two directions. Irritation (that I would be late to work yet again) and absolute love. Of course I had to spend a few minutes with her, getting her out of sleepymode and into the morning. I felt like I was abandoning her! I want her to know that it's not my choice that I'm not with her every second of the day. That I love her so much and that being a Mommy doesn't come with a rulebook, we're just winging it and doing the best I can.

Hello Beverly Hills Isn't That the way it is? In any relationship or discussion a good, healthy dose of common sense can make things work. Common sense allows for discussion of a matter with both, or all three sides contributing beneficial input. Taking things to an extreme can mess up any relationship or discussion. In any relationship there is a healthy give and take. No husband or wife is always right or sees everything that can be done to make a marriage work. Two personalities brought together requires give and take for the relationship/marriage to develop to it's full potential. this may require some "management" where one is weak and the other is stronger. You apparently are stronger in a given area(s) than your husband and have to "carry him along" to make your marriage work at it's best. To carry it too far would be unhealthy manipulation, taking advantage of him to his hurt, Someone earlier mentioned feminism. In some ways feminism has been beneficial to society in general and marriage in particular. But taken to the extreme feminism creates a combativeness and contention. In a good sense women's role in the home and in society has been recognized and elevated.. Taken too far it has husbands and wives fighting instead of being supportive of each other; creates manipulation instead of a healthy tension or maybe management in an area where it is needed. Well, maybe I'm getting too wordy and besides I'm running out of time.

I'm not a mother in law but I call my in-laws by their first name. I know that they'd like to call them mom and dad but I have a problem with that and so I'll never call them that. My parents called their in-laws by their names also - probably why I can't call my in-laws mom & dad.

My son's spouse calls me Mammaw and the daughter's husband calls me Charlene, which irritates me; he calls my husband Mr. Howard. What's wrong with this picture?

Our daughter's hubby calls us by our names, but he will at rare times call me Mom. He has his own mother. I sign cards to him as Mom2 since I am his "second" mother.

One of our daughters-in-law doesn't call me anything. I asked her to call me by my name but evidently she feels uncomfortable with anything at all. When she calls and I answer the phone she only says 'Hey' and then goes on with whatever she is calling about. It amuses me-

They call my husband and me by our names. That's fine with us. Of course we don't know what they call us out of earshot. LOLOL No, we get along fine with them. We love them as daughters. I call my mil by her first name but if she is talking about her late mil she calls her Mrs.______.

We only have one son-in-law. He calls us by name. When I do Christmas gifts I sign from Mom and Dad Smith. I was so used to writing Mom and Dad on the tags when I wrapped a pile, went to do the tags and accidently wrote of course Mom and Dad.
Once I needed his help with something and something like "my favorite son-in-law" he replied "that's cause I am your ONLY son-in-law" LOL He's a good guy!
I don't care what he calls us, he can call us whatever he is comfortable using.

All of ours call us by our first name... We love them dearly. Our oldest daughter has the most wonderful MIL and she loves her so. I know if I were not here she would step up and be a wonderful Mom to her. I told her from the very beginning that if there ever was a time that Annette wanted to call her Mom I would love that, too. I also told my daughter the same thing. She does call her mom and I can say it is a wonderful thing.

My daughter-in-law always tells me how much she loves me and how she has always felt like a wonderful part of out family from the beginning. She is my daughter, too. She always introduces me as her wonderful MIL. Her mom died 2 months after her first daughter was born. She saw her for the last time on Mother's day... Wonderful DIL...

Our new DIL calls us Momin and Dadin. She didn't want to call us by our first names but didn't want us to take the name she had always called her parents. I thought it was pretty creative.

I call my MIL by her first name...which is what her son calls her too.

My oldest son's girlfriend calls me Ma and my youngest son's girlfriend calls me Mom.

DDIL calls us Mom and Dad or Grandma and Grandpa and DD's SO calls us by our first names.

DSIL started calling me Mom or Ma even before the engagement. He was that sure of what he wanted. LOL

Son's SO doesn't call me anything. She is very shy and it took her a year to come around enough to talk to me out of his presence. In the past year she has come around and has become a lot more demonstrative. We exchanges hugs often and I can kiss her on the cheek and she no longer shy or tense around me. Quite the opposite so I figure it's only a matter of time. ;-)

Oldest DD eloped then escaped to us in Scotland after first grandson came along. I sure felt too young to be a grandma...so Nanny was born and has stuck. Although now that they are older Ellie slips in there often. Nanny

After Wes and I married, I jokingly asked my new MIL if I was to call her "Mom" now. (I could never call anyone but my mama "Mom.")

She looked at me and said "H3ll no; you will never call me 'Mom'."

Ooops. Step away from the crazy lady! LOL

I call her by her first name, as does DH (her son) most of the time. For some reason he's called her by her first name since he was a child. Odd, but it seems to work for them.

Generally our first names...unless I call Kalie's cell and her DH answers then it is...Hi ICE Mom! lol (In Case of Emegency Mom is what her phone has my number as.

Since they have found out that they are expecting, now it is Nana and Papa. =)
