How many of you are Black Friday addicts?
Comments (29)Some people are *really* into it. They spend most of Thanksgiving Day planning out their BF excursion. I guess it could be a good time for friends and family if that's what you're into but I just detest crowds of people and those heavy shopping days, people are not their, shall we say, friendliest! LOL I grew up naive of the Black Friday ritual. Shopping? There was a trip to the big city and head downtown and go shopping with my Aunt. Now there are some memories! However, Thanksgiving was always a family event and the day after was often cleaning up after the big affair, or even having Thanksgiving Part Deux. Neighbors would come over and there'd be another celebration. I really didn't know the term until I got into retail, and I learned a lot about it then! LOL...See MoreHow Many Like To Shop The Day After :)
Comments (29)I did it twice and probably not again....1st time, DD picked me up early, no makeup etc. (no one will see you)...We get to the store and every neighbor was there and as we rounded the aisle, a local newpaper took our pictures which just happen to be on the front page of the afternoon paper..... The other time, I was in Chicago with DD and DGDs at a dance competition...Sure enough, the day after, we all go downtown Chicago shopping....Now a good time to sightsee!...See MoreWhy I will NEVER go shopping on Black Friday...
Comments (24)What Pattico said: "Pattico, I too was in a dangerous crowd surge situation where nobody died. It's scary. You have no control. This was at a concert. The crowd surge happened with people leaving. People were allowed to take their seats early in the day so everyone filtered in. When it ended there was only one main entrance for every one to leave at once. The funnel effect. It was thousands of people. What happens is you get pushed forward by a wall of people. There is a force that comes in waves. I was being squeezed so tight my lungs couldn't expand to breath. Nobody behind me could back up. Nobody was going forward. My arms were tight at my side. I was panicking. As the crowd surges I lost my balance because my feet weren't even really touching the ground any more and I went down. The crowd surge immediately filled the empty space over me. It wasn't their fault. It was a wave of other people who also were being pushed from behind. They were trying to keep their balance too. I was getting stepped on. Some of the people stepping on me were the people I was with. They were being pushed by the crowd surge. I was thinking about the Who concert incident, and thought I was going to die." I was in a similar situation, with a MUCH smaller crowd, at the movies in college. Add to that, the fact that I'm sort of short, and my friend in front of me was MUCH shorter (it probably looked like a gap to the people behind me, so they pushed harder, probably), we were being pushed DOWN, and losing our balance. I finally yelled out, something about, "Stop shoving, there's a person in front of me, someone's going to get hurt," and the pressure from behind stopped. But I'm sure it wasn't even the people directly behind ME who were pushing. Maybe, maybe, there were people 20 or 30 layers back who *were* pushing, but it would be hard to identify them. I think that store bears a huge part of the blame. The Who concert should have taught them something; they should have had stronger line control....See MoreAre You Going Shopping on Black Friday for Something Special?
Comments (37)"Black Friday" makes me giggle. My best friend was a department store manager back when that was a snarky thing said by the clerks. The convergence of every work holiday has to have a sale to get them in the doors, with the traditional start of Christmas shopping season, made working on Thanksgiving Friday a nightmare of big crowds, mislabeled one day prices, demanding customers on a mission to score in a hurry to get to the next store, plus pushing and shoving and general lack of nice. Now we have stores promoting Black Friday, and even more, removing all meaning with "Spring Black Friday" and "All Month Long Black Friday" and "Black Friday Any Day Deals". Those 100 only doors open at 6:00 a.m. things are just to get you out of your warm bed and everyone home for the holidays comfort, and in to buy something, anything, since you got up so early for it. I don't play. I get the kind of bonding outings that Katlan and Socks describe. That sounds really nice. Especially if it's not in close crowds and there's room to walk. Our Thanksgiving Friday tradition is to stay home, do jigsaw puzzles, talk, maybe half watch a football game. Perhaps barbecue if the weather is nice. Just generally enjoy an unspoken for day off. :)...See Moreravencajun Zone 8b TX
