We've always had a stray and abandoned dog problem over here, but the financial situation these last few years has made it much much worse I'm afraid.

Happy-sad... The irresponsible owner has been found and 'Lucy' was returned home. Hope this may teach her (the owner) a lesson about caring for the dog better and not let the dog ungroomed and roaming free in an area full of strays without id and microchip. I would have made more fuss about it had I not seen that she had a child with developmental problems.

We don't seem to have that breed in the US. She seems charming and ideal as a family pet.

If you had heard the noises (literally..) that kid made when he saw Lucy there would be no doubt in your minds that returning her was the right thing to do. Anyways, apart from her fur being all tangled up and her being allowed to roam free, she looked quite well kempt and reasonably clean. Also her trusting temperament pointed to the fact that she had not been mistreated by a human. Thank you all.

That means your home and heart may be open for the next furry friend to come along :-)

I'm so happy that the dog ended up back home,with that little kid that clearly really loves and needs her . Nik,I LOVE your last post and totally agree with you. Besides, it'll be easy for a dog-lover like you to find another dog, whereas to that kid, that particular "Lucy" is probably pretty essential. You done good, Nik.

A cute dog! I have helped 6 lose dogs found their owners in my neighborhood. Some were neighbor's dogs running lose, some were from near by streets, I put a leash on 1 lose dog, he walked me back to its house, and the owner didn't know his dog was missing!? Another time while I was walking a lose dog on the steeet trying to find its home, the owner showed up in a car.......and 2 other lose dogs had phone numbers on their neck tags, which was easy to find the owner.

May be this cute dog is meant to be yours to keep. You'd need a name. :-)

I didn't read all the posts, glad you found the owner! I can't keep any lose dogs, 2 big dogs are enough for me. In our town, there is charge for owners ($85?) to pick up their dogs from police station if I called cops to come get the lose dogs. So I always try to find the owners 1st. How did they find the dog?

I just so happens that I might, just might, be adopting this young Kokoni rescue linked to below. If all works out she will be shipped (literally) from Crete... But even if I don't that would mean some other home closer to where she is now has been found so all will work fine for her.

I'm pleased to let you know that things are working out with Zizel (see a couple of posts above). The paperwork is done, I'm paying for her spaying and chipping to be done in Crete and also for the shipping to Pireaus port. Hopefully she will arrive pretty soon after she recovers from the operation. Poor thing..it will be a long 8 hour journey in a cage..

The chipping, spaying and long journey will be an ordeal for her, but I expect she will recover well and quickly with your care and attention. Here's hoping that she will soon feel right at home (although I'm also hoping she won't try to outcompete Lara in the barking department).

Zizel was chipped and spayed today. Waiting now to see when she will be well enough for shipping.. I haven't yet told Aris and Lara about her.. I thought it might be better if she made a surprise entrance..

Any day now.. shipping was delayed due to abominably cold and snowy weather. She'll be arriving just at the time when I'll be also dogsitting for Minnie the beagle (baby's 'sister').. It will be fun with 4 doggies roaming around... not sure about the neighbours though..

She arrived by boat this morning. I will let you know more tomorrow. She's a cute little dog somewhat smaller in size than a King Charles spaniel and very clever. 4 dogs at home currently, they're quite a handful.

Nik - so glad Zizel finally arrived! You are wonderful to take all of those rescues. What do Aris and Lara think of her? Pictures please, when you get a moment.

Kokoni dogs are very friendly and social dogs but they are not renowned for their docile character.. They are strong and energetic little dogs. They look like spaniels but are more like terriers in temperament.. As we talk there's a frenzied merry-go-round taking place in the garden with Zizel being closely chased by Lara followed by Minnie a very distant third.. Lara can run faster than Zizel but the latter has the advantage of fast stops and turns.. Aris is just sitting looking at them in awe.. I just managed to clip one front foot's toenails but she didn't have the patience to let me do the rest because she wanted to be chased by Lara..

^this is cheery news on a cold damp day here. I'm delighted Zizel is settling in. It must have been quite a journey for the little doggie, not knowing what was going on.

Oh it was ugly on the ship when I went down to Pireus to fetch her. She had spent the night in a cage and she was so very freightened, terrified really, that she acted like one of those wild animals you see on wildelife documentaries that look so ferocious when cornered. She wouldn't let me touch her not to mention grab her, put the leash on her and take her out of the cage. If I didn't know better I would have been badly bitten. I resorted to the coat trick where I took off my coat and threw it on top of her to give me some hold without her being able to bite me.. The cage floor was messy with urine and my coat got a good dose of it (thank God for the washing machine..). It was a struggle to negotiate the large ship and take her down to the car without getting bitten.. And then after a 45 min drive she had to face 3 ferocious blood thirsty monsters, Aris the largest of them, easily 5 times her size wanting to tear her into pieces, or so she must have thought. She spent the better part of 2 hours under the car. But 3-4 hours after she was all good and friendly with everyone.. What a nightmarish experience that must have been for her.

...horrendous... fingers crossed it all works out well for you all, and hope she can settle down to the good things in life which we have no doubt you will provide.

You did well getting her home there...

It sounds like Zizel is a resilient sort to be out playing so soon after her nightmarish time on the ship. Hopefully, she's already realizing that she's found a safe home where she'll be well cared for and have lots of fun with her new canine "siblings" (and her humans).

When you can, I know we'd all like to see photos...
