You've got to see this CL find! Balloon chair
Comments (33)Your chair will be wonderful to see when you finish. DD and I stayed at Hotel Monaco in Portland, OR some time back and enjoyed seeing balloon style chairs there in a part of their extended foyer. I had not remembered exactly what theirs looked like, (just had fun sitting in them), but this photo below was one from their website...and it's a much smaller style and has more open arms, but still with the covered top. I love the fabric you're planning to use and think that will be so great looking. BTW, thanks for the info about Joann's since I've been eyeing a home dec fabric there, so this wkend will be a great time to get it! Can hardly wait to see your finished chair....See MoreChoosing couches and layout for family room
Comments (7)mtnreredux, I wish that i could link to the color choices. The only place I can find them on their site is in their Design Online tool and that works on Shockwave which I find kind of a pain. I've tried using some room planners and pushing paper couch pieces around on a room plan, but I don't have a good feel for whether the layouts will work. I know that we want the main couch to face the TV/fireplace area and be around 3.5 to 4 feet away from the island. The rug is 7' by 9' or we could swap it with a bit smaller one that we have in our bedroom with the same colors but more of the darker blue and less red area. Perhaps I don't understand the warm and cool color thing. After all, I've seen green referred to as a warm color in a post and I thought green was cool. Isn't the stone in the room mainly cool with all that blue? There is a lot more of that then shows in the picture because the kitchen counters and backsplash are all in that stone. Is it wrong to mix warm and cool colors? I often like a warm cool mix. It's hard to find a warm choice that fits. They have browns but something like a chocolate brown feels too dark. A reddish brown (they have something called cherry) seems like it adds too much red with the room already having a lot of cherry cabinets and some red in the rug. We don't like the orangy colors they have. There are light kind of neutral colors like kitt and stone, but then they seem too similar in color to the maple floor or the cream walls. There is a medium brown that they call khaki (but it doesn't look like what I think khaki is) that might work. Or a dark green called new forest, but I think that's still cool and it feels out of place introducing a new color that doesn't tie in with anything else in the room, and it might be too dark. The pearl grey isn't too dark or too light and that it ties to the blues in the stone and the rug. Perhaps Here is a link that might be useful: Stressless design online...See MorePlease help me choose the right size sofa (s) for my space
Comments (14)thanks again everyone! I stopped by a local furniture store and she recommended a 10 x 10 sectional and a chair and a half. I think we could go either direction with the sectional if we go that route- facing window (yes, nice views!) or facing door (which would give more seating closer to the tv. To answer a few questions: this is our only 'living/family' space. There is not a secondary living room for entertaining. We don't entertain much and when we do we all end up at the kitchen island. We do spend a lot of time in our basement. It is a very integral living area to our house- two of my kids have bedrooms there, we have the secondary family/tv watching space, and a bar area. Definitely use! As far as the tv location we spent a lot of time discussing one side vs the other. Ultimately I think we are happy with the left side of the fireplace for the tv. As I said earlier, it is farthest from the main entrance to the house. Also as far as furniture shift I prefer to shift away from the entry rather than towards it. There are a couple negatives and one is the glare, at certain times of the year during late afternoons. Most of the time it's fine. We have a lot of privacy on the back of our house so we have elected not to have shades over the windows....but certainly if the tv glare bothered us THAT MUCH we could add shades to help that. Yes, there is outlet in the floor, however floor lamps are iffy because I have a special needs child who is older and has in the past broken a lot of lamps because he doesn't know not to knock them over. So, my other question then is lets say we do a sectional that faces the window (and therefore backs against the entry way). And so we put a sofa table behind it. Then do we have a second sofa table behind the other part of the sectional as well? Two sofa tables? Love all the input and ideas!...See MoreAdded pic from previous post so whole couch and ottoman is shone
Comments (48)Please keep the lantern and the tools on the hearth...that looks lovely there. Also love your candle/flowers on the dining table. To me, things that help with "cozy"--Plants. If you don't have room for a floor plant, maybe a hanging plant near the window. A lovely throw, pillows that have texture, flowers on a tray on the ottoman.... Without a doubt the dog is a huge plus :) and he poses so wonderfully! These things work and you're well on the way to making a lovely room even lovelier.....See Morerazamatazzy
