In a recent thread on reliable security software, readers were referred to a PCmag article. That article made me realize I misunderstood what Malwarebytes Anti-Malware was doing. I thought it was behind the scenes, always doing its "thing" - apparently not. I've been doing updates weekly but not always scanning. It seems I only need to update before I do a scan as MAM does nothing by merely being installed/updated.

Here's the statement from the article:
