In a recent thread on reliable security software, readers were referred to a PCmag article. That article made me realize I misunderstood what Malwarebytes Anti-Malware was doing. I thought it was behind the scenes, always doing its "thing" - apparently not. I've been doing updates weekly but not always scanning. It seems I only need to update before I do a scan as MAM does nothing by merely being installed/updated.

Here's the statement from the article:

"...bring out these cleanup-only tools when you have a nasty malware infestation. When the problem's gone, they have no further use, since they offer no ongoing protection. Our Editors' Choice in this category is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.0, and it's definitely one you should try if you've got a malware problem."

Malwarebytes is a broom and dust pan, not a Roomba robot. Until you manually start it and put it to work, it's doing nothing. I've found that many people share this misunderstanding and also don't fully understand its use.

If your security software FAILS to detect an intrusion, if you can get Malwarebytes started, it likely will clean out the problem. That's its main use as far as I'm concerned. I have it on my machines (just as some might have a fire extinguisher in a kitchen or garage) but I plan to never need it. And through the years, its use has been rare in my house.

If you choose and install one of the top rated, comprehensive security suites (which do stay alert real-time and block dangerous activity and downloads), use common sense in your internet use and restrict downloads to a minimum and only essential items coming from known and legit sources, you will never need Malwarebytes.

That's only true if you're using the FREE version. If you want active protection, invest a few $ in Anti Malware Premium.

What's the difference between free and premium?

The areoles and spines on Oroya and Sulcorebutia look similar, but the body of this plant is different from a S. mentosa, which has more defined tubercles, and the look and arrangement of the spines doesn't fit mentosa very well either. Considering the huge variability within Sulcorebutia I cannot swear that this plant isn't one (odd-looking, and I have no idea of what species it would be), but my bet is still on Oroya. A flower, or at least a bud, would probably rule out one of the genera as they look different and appear closer to the apex in Oroya.

The only M. bocensis I've seen had a pink flower, but a quick check of my books reveals that it can have pink or greenish flowers, I reckon S&B is right! CP
