Slide-in range countertop cutout sizing?

I'm helping my parents buy a replacement slide-in range. Existing range is around 15 years old, electric Frigidaire. Looking to replace with a midrange induction model. The countertops are corian and, as is standard with slide-in ranges, has a continuous strip of countertop that runs along the back of the existing range. As we look at replacement ranges, I was wondering if most slide-in ranges are going to have standard sizes so that they will work with our existing countertop. Like, if i go on ajmadison.com and refine my search to slide-in induction ranges under $3500 (which captures kitchenaid, GE, etc) can i pretty much assume they will all work with the existing countertop? Or is this going to be a major pain to work with? I'll obviously double check before we buy, but it would be helpful to have an idea so that i don't have to pour over the install dimensions of every model I look at online.

Yes, the slide-in ranges will work - in fact, GE, I think, guarantees it will fit. Also, most slide-in induction manufacturers also offer a stainless panel that can go between the range and the counter just in case the opening is a little too large.

Some brands (like Bosch) are full depth and do not require the strip in the back. (I had to remove mine). In addition, different brands have different height ranges. In my case, again, it was an issue since my counters are lower than standard due to new hard wood flooring added on top of the existing floor. My suggestion is that you first narrow down which ones you like, and then carefully look at the installation manuals. AJmadison have them and are easy to download. I had narrowed it between Bosch and Samsung but only Bosch worked (barely!) with the height of my counters.

With all due respect, I beg to differ. My kitchen installer and my countertop fabricator and installer both told me the countertop needs to go under the lip of the slide in if it is a true slide-in and not a free standing range. That is WHY the range has a lip on each side and it is what gives the "built-in" look. More than one granite professional told me the same when I asked, because I had really wanted to avoid making that purchase right away, but didn't want to be sorry later if I waited. I went out and purchased a new range just for this reason because everyone was adamant that in order to be installed "correctly" the range had to be purchased in advance so the opening could be custom cut for the model of range so that the lip would fit over the countertop. That is not the case for a free standing unit where you can just slide it into place between 2 cabinets. That is what I had before and was going to replace it with a slide in at a later date to save money. That was not recommended by anyone involved in my kitchen. That said, if you already have a standard 30" space with no overhang, you CAN probably substitute a slide in there but it might not have the custom fit it would otherwise. I can get photos if needed. Corian is aluminum oxide (sapphire) loaded plexiglass. Corian can be cut with high surface speed carbide tools such as router bits and high-tooth-count carbide-tipped circular saw blades with plastic cutting profiles. In both cases means are needed (in my view, Corian artisans may differ) to assure (trap) the tool so that it is restrained as to where it can inadvertently go. Anticipate a lot of dust. All cutting tools should be considered sacrificial in the long term. For one-time efforts like this, it would likely be more economical to have a Corian counter specialist do the work unless one is a tool hound and believes that every acquired tool will come in handy sometime in the indefinite future. kas

Kim K Here is an additional consideration with this Jenn Air range -The instructions provide two installation options Slide In Cutout: Allows for a strip of counter top behind the range, similar to the cutout that would be made for a typical overlap slide in. Instructions state that with this option the front of the oven door may protrude beyond the base cabinet. It does not appear to specify the depth of the cutout required but states that the counter strip should be no more than 2 1/4" Freestanding Cutout: Counter strip is not shown. This should allow the range to be pushed up against the wall reducing the protrusion beyond the cabinet. In my case, the range will be installed in the corner of an L layout with only 2" or so to the right of the range before the corner. I was concerned that if the range protruded too far out, a wider filler would be needed in the corner on the long L so that the drawers that pull out toward the range could clear the range handle. The Freestanding Cutout option with this "No Back"/"Slide In" range should work best. It appears from the diagram that the vent along the back should sit flat up against the wall.

We are in same boat. But we still have the range in place - its the Kenmore dual-fuel double oven range that they no longer make. I've looked at every option out there. 1. Get a 36" range - you can fill in the cabinets with fillers pretty easily - but I've never encountered a solution for countertops. This scenario almost must involve getting new countertops 2. Get a 40" range - there are several European models out there - I think there are a couple models not too bad (<$5k). I didn't like this option as I really wanted a more traditional 36" pro style range 3. Redo the whole kitchen and get whatever size appliance you want. This is what we decided to do - we were only going to do countertops plus new appliances - but considering this is a one-time deal, and we wanted both a new size range and a new size refrigerator - we decided to spend the additional money on new cabinets too.

Thanks! I saw that lots of the slide-ins are offering this back vent strip now (and really these are probably better described as drop in ranges with a strip to make them look built in). I couldn't tell at all from the bosch manual whether it was detachable. Are they generally removeable?

Not sure if we are talking about the same, but the "vent" in the back of the Bosch is not removable.

I think I'm the one who is confused! The Bosch talks about how it has a strip so that you can use it to replace drop in ranges where there is no countertop behind it. But sounds like, in addition to that removable strip, there is also a vent along the back that is not removable and also works with existing slide-in countertop cutouts? I may just have to call bosch to confirm :)

Check this Thread. Somewhere in the middle there are pctues next to a measuring tape. The metal strip shown there is not removable. I believe you can buy the extra strip if your counters are deeper.
