Newbie to baking....sourdough bread

OK, I'm a pretty decent cook, 60 YO, can make some bangin blueberry/bran muffins or cake from a mix, but otherwise am NOT a baker!

Today I got some sourdough starter from freecycle and the woman (must have been in her mid 80s) rattled off how much of this to add to how much of that and names of San Francisco bakers that this starter came from!

Can anyone help me out with a sourdough bread recipe (hopefully whole wheat (if that exists) and how to preserve this starter to pass on to others? Nancy
