Read any good books lately?
Comments (25)I just finished "Dog On It", one of Mary's recommendations. The premise sounded sort of cheesy, but it was so well written from the point of view of the dog. Chet -- the dog -- will be thinking deep thoughts about the case and suddenly be sidetracked by a cheerio on the floor or the scent of a cat. Very clever. If you like books about cheese making, try "Blessed are the Chessemakers" by Sarah-Kate Lynch. It's fiction with a touch of magic which I'm finding I like in a story. Our book group recently read "Water for Elephants". It was one I would never have picked up on my own and I loved it. The group also picked "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" which I did not read. Little boys being killed in concentration camps is not my cup of tea. I'm also reading "Night Night Little Pookie" three or four times a day to the year old grandson. He likes it as much as I do!...See MoreWhat have you been enjoying in your garden lately?
Comments (5)I really need to find out how to do pictures. I only know how to put them on AOL. I just put in an Acuba japonicus, Mr. Gold-something. Put in some dwarf mondo grass where grass wouldn't grow. I'm very happy with my happy wild mix of impatiens and coleus. The colors just glow outside my kitchen window. Out that same window I get to watch the birds and squirrels. Junkos, purple finches, cardinals, thrashers (they even get on the feeder, which they are a little large to do, LOL), chickadees, and robins are frequent visitors. I have at least 2 hummers that visit the black and blue salvia. We have rabbits, including a baby bunny that is eating stuff in my front garden. He is lucky he's so cute. I need him to get bigger fast so he doesn't tempt the rat snake. My Nikko blue hydrangea has wonderful blue blooms, probably more than ever before, but no where near as prolific as my neighbor's. We'll have to cut a few more limbs overhead. My balloon flowers are doing well - even the tall one I moved. I can never believe that color. My red white and blue garden looks good. I sure hope the water restrictions in July are going to just give us a watering schedule. Anybody have a link to the rules?...See MoreWhat have you been reading lately?
Comments (58)I'm currently reading "Game of Thrones", and really enjoying it. Terriks, I know exactly what you mean about the "porn" in the first episode--we got the 1st season on DVD (no HBO at our house...) and I was sort of appalled. However I liked the overall story so we stuck with it. Interestingly the later episodes did not have nearly as much--perhaps they felt like they needed to reel in a certain kind of viewer at the beginning. Eew! I also enjoy mysteries. Recently I enjoyed the "Lincoln Lawyer" series of books by Michael Connelly. There are five that follow that character. Some of my favorite "special" books I've read from over the past year: "City of Thieves" a great coming of age novel by David Benioff set during the siege of Leningrad. "The Whistling Season" by Ivan Doig. I LOVED this book, but I have to confess some of my book club buds were just okay with it, since it it not super plot-driven. If you like books about interesting people you just want to spend time with, and beautifully crafted language, this is great. Funny and sweet and wistful, narrated by a man looking back at a special year in his childhood in rural Montana. Especially good to read if you are a teacher. "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrandt. Pretty harrowing non-fiction, but really fascinating, too. "Any Bitter Thing" by Monica Wood. Our book club read this and every person loved it. I've also recommend it to several people, and they all loved it as well. It can be a little hard to find unless you order online, and none of us can figure why it didn't become a huge bestseller. It has some mystery elements to it, but it's more than that. Happy reading to you all, and thanks for the suggstions...See MoreSo ... read any good books lately?
Comments (22)Well, the library continues to grow ... I just this afternoon recieved Carla Emery's fine reference book 'The Encyclopedia of Country Living' (the updated 9th edition) and have been browsing through it between bites of dinner. Gosh, what an excellent piece of work this is! It's obvious the love she put into it during the 32 plus years that she spent compiling and writing. As an aside, a book doesn't need to be new to be useful ... mine are because I don't have a nearby source of used books of this type. So I get the new ones from Amazon.com and offset that by donating all my unused used books to the Mark Skinner Library ... so far two decent sized boxes of them. But I also have a number of very old used (obviously!) books that I found in a trunk out in the barn....See MoreMarilyn Sue McClintock
