Reinventing the rose: How to grow beautiful blooms without those
Comments (3)I think there is along way to go in this.. Very few desease proof flowers are beautiful and frangrant at once, that also repeat blooms. If knockout is the steller standout.. I think thats enough said, its not 100% desease proof, isnt exactly a classic rose look or perfect in a mixed border. Im not looking to pessimistic here, but I think the attaboys should come after the fact not before. My best desease proof roses are the old spinosissima and the Rugosa or hybrids, many of which have superior bloom and scent over the knockout series.. they just dont repeat or repeat is minimal, and form isnt always there, so they are regelated to speciatly nuseries.. Comments (22)Oldhouselover: Concerning the tree, cut it whenever you would like or find convenient. It's already growing there, it won't hurt to leave it until fall when the leaves on the roses are cleared and it's easier to reach in there. Don't sweat it or worry :). Just make sure not to forget to cut it in the fall - it must go. 4 more months of growth from the tree won't hurt the rose. Amazingly, if that is a Tree of Heaven, which I'm almost positive, that tree may be only one year old, possibly two. They grow fast. So don't forget to cut it out this fall :). I personally would not use any herbicide whatsoever on the tree of heaven. Due to your sentimental feelings for the rose and desire to keep it as healthy as possible, the risk of accidentally spilling even a little herbicide is too great. Just be vigilant and be ready to cut the little shoots the ToH will inevitably send out in the spring once you cut it down. I would move the hostas. Others here would have better knowledge on how/when to trim the rose to a more managable and visually appealing form. The hostas, though, are being overrun by the rose and if you would like to save them, move them. Even if you want to keep them in that bed, you can move them out of the way of the rose. It happens. Sometiems my stuff gets out of control so I just move it. It's hard to kill hostas. They'll be happy wherever you put them as long as it's not full sun. Most importantly, don't OVERCARE for the rose!!!!!! :). That's the biggest mistake I see most people on all of these forums make, especially people new to gardening. I've seen more isntances of people overcaring for their plant and damaging it than undercaring for a plant. Keep in mind, the rose is decades old and apparently no one cared for it too much, and it's still alive and thriving :). Ignore your impulses for fertilizer, watering everyday, and all that. It is a beautiful bush and I'm sure those on this forum will be able to help you trim it into a more managable form :)....See MoreTips on how to take care of a rose garden during summer and fall
Comments (2)This time of year in cold weather zones you don't deadhead to encourage bloom production because it is too late in the season for this to happen. It is best to prune for the end of the season which means get rid of excessive leggy growth and bad and old canes. The good canes you leave will get thicker and heavier and hopefully will mostly make through the winter and be the basis for the rose next year. New growth begun at this point will likely be killed by the winter....See MoreHow Do I Fix / Take Care of Double Knock Out Roses
Comments (8)I wouldn't cut back anything on plants that size. Definitely amend the hole, but mix the compost etc with some native soil. Yes, to watering. I water in the soil half-way through planting and again at the end and make a trough at the root line to help corral the water, then mound some compost over the canes. Depending on sun exposure, I would shade them with something such as lawn chairs or an umbrella at least until you start to see new growth.they may look worse at first, but soon little leaves will appear and you can fertilize with something gentle and organic. Many people recommend fish emulsion, but I've never used it. I don't see why you won't get blooms this Fall. Good Luck! P.S. I'm a newbie also, but have had good luck planting and transplanting throughout the summer....See MoreSara (9b SF Bay Area)
